So I just got a good deal on a C&L MAF (props to Jakee again!). my question is, what size tamper-proof torx bit do I need to take this MAF off?

I'm not sure of the size but any auto parts store will have an inexpensive set.

i think you can buy a set of bits at most auto stores for like 7-8 bucks, it's nice to have cause it'll handle most torx sizes. i just wish i could find one to take apart my 360 controller.

Alf - Sorry I didn't get back to you. You'll need a 1/4" Hex bit with the hollow I.D. center. (Where the little tit fits)

If you have the money, pick up some MAF cleaner and clean that thing when you have it out.

how much do those run?

I bought myself an entire set of tamper proof torx bits at big lots for $3!!!!

Thanks guys for the replies. Jakee- in the past Ive cleaned my MAF with automotive electronics cleaner. This should be ok, yes?

Depening on the size around $150-160 maybe more. Then you use your factory electronics. You will also need a tuner/prgrammer (like an Xcal) after you install the MAF.

Afboy,

Did you mean to post something below the quote?:D

Crap- Yes. I tryed to post a reply in class on my phone but I guess it didnt work. What I was trying to say was: Do I NEED a tune when I install this MAF? The reason I ask is I did have a tune until recently. It was a 93 octane torque tune from Doug at bamachips but due to fuel, I switched it back to stock tune so I can run 87. What if I run this MAF with my stock tune??

You do not "need" a new tune, after all, you are running the stock MAF electronics.

Boy did this get confusing.

I was asnwering Shortstack's question about the cost of a C&L MAF and decided to explain what would need to be done.

Then Afboy, you thougth I was talking to you. That's what happens when someone hijacks a thread.;)

But you told shortstack he needed a tune with the C&L MAF, so I figured oh crap, maybe I do too since I returned my truck back to stock....

You don't have to have a tune but to really get the full benefit from it you'll need a tune

That's what I figured. Im really only got it because I got a great deal and I wanted to increase MPG. We shall see

Alf - The electronic cleaner is good.

Also, like the others already said, you don't HAVE to have the tune. The size of the 73MM C&L MAF housing is just a tad bigger than the stock MAF housing on your truck.

However, the true story is, you now have a bigger MAF housing and the air rushing by that stock sensor will be at a different rate than stock. What this all means when you don’t have a tune is this;

1) The PCM will be determining the amount of fuel to add based on the air rushing by the stock sensor.
2) The air rushing by the sensor will be a tad slower than the stock tune is set-up for.
3) The result will be a VERY small discrepancy in your actual air/fuel measurement. It’s WAY too small to worry about, and if it was a problem, your truck will throw a code. (It won't)

Now, say you buy a 75MM C&L MAF housing. This WILL result in a code because this housing is too much for the stock tune.
