Hi there,

I have a 1997 Explorer.

I bought it a year ago and its been great. Has only travelled 50k from new.

The only problem it has had is the follwing; and since I am now selling, I want to fix if possible.

When I come to a stop, for the last five yards or so, I feel a vibration as if the ABS has kicked in. I don't have to be going fast, in fact, it is usually when I am in traffic that it is most noticeable. I feel it through my brake pedal but it doesn't affect the braking at all. It ONLY happens at really low speed and also sometimes happens without braking at all, if i am just coasting at 2 or 3 mph. There is never a warning light when this happens.

I took the fuse for the ABS out and the problem stopped, so obviously, it is definitely an ABS problem.

I am desperate to sell but i think anyone would be put off by this problem and i will have to knock £500 ($1000) off the price.

Has anyone come across this ?

BTW, i took to my local car mechanic and his diagnostic machine could find no problem, so told me to take it to Ford.

Thanks alot.

Simon

No I haven't done that.

I'm not much of a home mechanic and I don't think I'd have a clue what to look for.

Can they be found easily ?

Abs I was gonna say the ab-roller or bowflex

Help with ABS

Just doing some follow-up on this thread. My '95 XLT is doing the EXACT same thing......ABS is being activated during the last 5 yards of a complete stop.

Did Simon ever get a confirmation that it was the brake dust coating the ABS sensor that was causing the problem.

Just curious so I know what to suggest to my mechanic?

Thanks in advance.

Buck

I am having a similar issue, but it doesn't happen all the time and NEVER when not braking. I cannot "turn-on" the problem, but it seems to happen when I am coming to a slow stop.

I agree with Ruby- I thought this was going to be a workout thread... :D

I had that problem and had my bearings replaced. The ABS sensors are located in the bearings and it took care of the problem

ABS sensor is NOT located in the bearing on RWD. Its on the plate that holds the studs

I have same problem, but its cause I dented my ABS tone ring. It will be fine...then revolve into that spot, and slip some
I know its the tone ring because I attempted to bang it back flat and IT GOT MUCH BETTER
