I ran a hardwire through the defroster vent- slid right through...
I didn't want the buried cig plug, so I did this:
bought this harness on Amazon for $15.00: CLICK ME
it comes with a fused voltage regulator to pull the power down to the required voltage for the GPS (which is the same stuff also in the cig lighter plug- gotta have that stuff to keep the GPS safe!) It was a power wire and a ground. Some guys just hack the cog plug, but you won't have the protection, as it is in the plug housing that you cut off.
Ran the wire through the defroster vent hole and into the void behind the radio
Then I wired it into the switched power on the truck side of the radio harness
This is what I have sticking out of the dash now
As it mounts
What I see
Now, it powers up when I start the truck, and powers off like when you unplug it when I turn off the truck- giving you the option to either turn off totally, or run on the GPS internal battery. Very cool, works awesome, and I also still have the cig lighter plug if I want to use it in my other car. It's a long wire, it could also mount up above if you prefer the high mount, I liked the dash location better for my eye.
I garage the Ex, so I usually leave the GPS mounted, but I can simply unplug it if I want to take the GPS with me. Works stellar!
