i have 145000 miles on my 92 ford explorer sport, i think it is time for a new engine.I really want a 5.0(302) but that is going to be too expensive. So i am just going to install a newer vsersion of the engine in there already.Which year needs the least modifications, and if i do need mods what are they.

Thanks in advance
Louis

P.S the years i am thinking about are 97,98,99 ohv

My car is 92 ford explorer sport
4X2

FYI, 97 was the last year with the OHV V6. The SOHC was offered in 97 as an option and I think it became standard with 98's and up. You can drop in a SOHC, but you'll also need the computer and other stuff. People have done it, it's just a little more involved than swapping in another OHV. I've had great luck with my 96 OHV, you'd probably be good with a low-mileage 95-97 OHV. Again, think about getting the SOHC. It's a little more work, but they start at 205 hp instead of 160.

Louis,

All of the OHVs after 91 have the same HP ratings. As far as I know you do need to strip the new engine and install all of your electronics and senders on the new engine. The newer OHVs have a plastic upper intake which you might want to swicth with your aluminum upper- someone posted that it may flow better- cant find proof of that though, but it will have all of your fittings and senders already on it.

I would just find one with the lowest miles on it and use that one.

good luck

OHV was still available in 2000. It is the only way to get a manual Transmission in the Explorer all the way up to 2000. They started makeing a manual trans for the SOHC but have been having problems so 2001 explorers do not have a manual Trans available or the OHV.

I think this has been covered before.. but if your planning on getting a new engine... the V8 is the way to go. You get the power for close to the same price
