The indicator has a cable that runs to a lever on the shifter and it runs through a nylon bracket that has an adjusting wheel. It sounds like that nylon bracket has cracked and is giving way. I had this happen to mine.
You can't by the bracket, you have to buy the assembly, but I did repair mine. It is fairly easy to do and you don't have to take the whole dash apart to do it, just the lower panels under the dash.
Put the shift lever in low gear which makes less tension on the cable and makes it easier to remove. A screw holds the bracket in place, once you get the panels off and can see it unhook the cable from the lever and remove the bracket. Unscrew the adjusting wheel until you can remove the cable from the bracket.
I super glued the bracket in place to hold it and then used JB weld generously to give it strength being carefull no to get the JB weld where the adjusting wheel had to be. If you do get some in there you can trim it out with a sharp knife.
Assembly the cable and wheel back into the bracket and screw the bracket back into place. Put the shifter in Drive and adjust the wheel until the indicator is centered over Drive and you are done. Replace the panels you removed.
