HELP power loss engine check light on

my 97 xl is running like a bag of .... engine light is on and i get a big power loss now and then
the local ford workshop wants 110 bucks to scan the ecu
but cant garantee that they will find anything.
ive heard alot of storys about these ppl trowing parts at these cars and hoping they will fix it with little or no idea what the problem is
i dont mind paying sombody to fix the thing as long as they know whats wrong with it
any ideas?

i had similar problem. it was the coil pack. i could have fixed it myself for 1/3rd of what a gas station charged.
see if autozone can scan it, but a bad coil pack sends out codes for a misfire

thanks mate but we dont have auto zone here in oz maybe repeated blows with a extremly large hamer will fix it huh?lol

get the codes scanned at the dealer and take it from there
