stereo head unit swap in 2000 ranger. new head unit is 4yo kenwood (50watts/channel). problems started...

head unit loosing power...speedometer went out....turn signals went....power windows failed...over drive shut off...transmission lost gears and went into neutral...everything. But, as soon as the power returned to the head unit, all was fine!

Problem sourcing directed us to the GEM, General Electronic Module. Perhaps the head unit was too powerful? The GEM head unit channel couldn't take the extra load? Anotrher question, i recently found out that a lot of the fuses were wrong when the truck was purchased (second hand). original owner was a nut case. Does anyone have a correct fuse diagram? I do not have the owner manual i bought it it at a auction and it had no paper work with it.

Please help!! THANKS!!!

Welcome to the forum. How did you hook up the stereo? Did you use a wiring harness or cut and splice? Manuals can be found here... click me

thank you.. i used a wiring harness and so i am guessing i just pulled to much power from the GEM. So, I think i need to ground the stero a differnt way.I was hoping it would be easy

Never seen an aftermarket radio draw that much power. But, try running a new power (with a fuse) and ground wire.

yea, the stero doesn't draw that much power, in my opinion. 50 W which is AVG, but idk. I know before I got the truck there was signs of someone breaking into the car and ripping a non stock stero out, and with that signs of the truck being tricked out (green light bulbs everywhere, leds.. etc) so what i am thinking is something happened to the truck in the past and the person fixed the problem, by jerryrigging it and then roped the truck. From there when I installed the new stero the hidden problems reappeared. (but i might be totaly wrong) the only thing I am guessing is something happened to the GEM. I am working on getting the gem for my truck now, and hopefully then I will try the harness agein but if that does not work then well blaa idk from there.

Thanks

That deff. sounds like it might be the problem. Try to trace all the wires back down into the dash if you can from the radio. Maybe when someone ripped it out they ripped some wires.

Yea, I already checked all the wires everything seems to be in order, and i placed the fuses back to original stock now that i have a copy of the digram.. I finaly found the gem for my truck today it was only a 1 hr drive, for a fully working car,if you did not count the thirty minutes of brake down time on the road.. the Overdrive shut off so i pulled to the side of the road and put it in park. well it just happens the ABS kicked in and would not allow for me to put the truck back in drive for 30 mins. Now that i have the gem i need to go the the thing flashed and mabye then this truck will be good to go. Hopefully

ok well he GEM did not solve the problem like i was hoping.. next step

Take me to dinner and Ill fix the ranger :D

j/k I love electrical problems but cant help without seeing the truck myself. So Im of no real help lol.

Ok, I asked one of the electrical guys at work about this today for you. He said next time it does this to check your voltage at the battery. You will need a multi meter but they are cheap. If the voltage is too low it can cause this sort of thing. Let me know what it is if you can check it later.
