help:sas or ttb?

Still looking for a cheap 3/4 front. Everything else is ready. I have the rear and the money and as soon as i get a front everything will be assembled and completed within 2 weeks. It will be done before June 3rd. Promsie.
 






Seems like everybody is summing it up by asking what type of wheeling you'll be doing. I do quite a few of wheeling in sand, mud, and dirt/rock. IN the sand and mud the TTB's held up fine. If I was going to stay with this type of wheeling then I would keep the TTB's.
However I do a lot more dirt and rock wheeling and broke the R&P on my TTB D35. I didn't have a locker in there so I had to pick the best line and use some momemtum to get over an obstacle. The result was a drive shaft spinning but no axle shaft spinning. I could easily replace the R&P in the front and maybe even add a locker while Im doing that (which would be a lot cheaper then going SAS) but afraid to break another R&P. (I would've thought the hubs would break first??) So instead of spending money on repairing the TTB's I decided to go SAS with a full width HP D44 and 9" in the back.

Taking into consideration what everyone else had said, just make sure you pick what you REALLY want or else you might regret it!
 






im basicly wondering the same thing, but my choices are either dana 44 with 4.88 gears and 37's with around 8" of lift
or stock front axle with 4.56 gears and 35's and 7" of lift

what would be better for a daily driver(some freeway driving 75mph) and weekend wheeler?
 






I have the EB D44 setup, width is pretty close. I've taken it all over the place on highways, prepare to not get up to highway speeds though. I can usually get up to 65-70 pretty nice ;) It was my daily driver that way for about a year.

There's a certain year range of dodge trucks that have the 4.5 bc, first one I saw I thought was running ford gear, pigs on the correct side and all, later ones I'd looked at had the 5on5 pattern though. You'll ahve to search but they are out there

Have no idea what years they are, (the only dodges I care for are road runners, chargers, and darts) but it's the more rounded looking ones.

Mine drives just fine on the street. If gas weren't so expensive it would be my daily driver. Can hit 85+ still on the freeway too.

roadrunner was a plymouth lol :D but still one of the best muscle cars :thumbsup:

I have heard by many people that their trucks drive better on the road with the SAS than they did with the lifted TTB.

You could use wheel adapters, but they space out the wheels about 1.5-2"(atleast). I am not sure if there are any replacement shafts that are made to do this.
 






You can have custom shafts made with whatever bolt pattern you want. They cost around $300 for the rear and $600 for the front.

We've went around about this before, but here goes again. A Dana 30 isn't much of an "upgrade" over a D-35 TTB. All you really gain is the articulation of a solid axle.
 






and ground clearance, plus the D30 can be built up pretty friggin strong.

The TTB when lifted can ride like crap, or it can ride like a dream! Bump steer is the worst possible characteristic the TTB has, removing the bump steer is not easy when you are talking bolt on lift kits, so alot of people give up on it. PLus there is alot going opn under there, lots of moving parts, u joints, etc so people tend to scrap them.

A solid axle has a huge advantage over any IFS when it comes to rocks and large obstacles, when one tire is forced int he air it pushes the other tire into the ground, creating more traction.

I am going to go BIG with my TTB, after this summer the focus on my truck will be suspension. It is hard for me not to chose the solid axle swap, but I think for the type of wheeling this BII will see (MOAB) the TTB will be fine, onthe street I could not be happier with the way my truck drives, Colorado roads are crappy, and my truck makes short work of them.
 






Please dont waste your money on a Dana30. I had jeeps in the past that have had dana 30's up front and every one of them has had problems. They cant hold up to hardly anything...especially not 35's. If you do the SAS go ahead and go all out and get something that will be stronger and last longer. A dana 30 may seem like a cheap way out right now..but you will end up paying the price in the end. Do it right the first time!

the dana 30 isn't that bad. its about as strong as a dana 44 lp. its jus about the right width for an x. its got the right bolt pattern. pretty reasonable in price. as far as 35's on a dana 30. i looked at everyone who has done a dana 30 sas on here... and is running 35's and lockers. without problems i might add (atleast to my knowledge). yomie i believe had 36's and a locker up front on his. when i chose the dana 30 i knew i wanted 35's so that would work great for me. and so it seemed perfect. i have now limited myself to 35's though. which i think is what bothers me the most. i don't have the option of going bigger if i was to choose to do so at a later time. anyways i can live with that and the way it is now the combo i have now works great for me. i now have a reliable offroad/ daily driver ride. so its all good. i sometimes gripe about exactly how i chose to do my truck as far as sas it but its b/c i'm too busy focusing on the bigger and better things i could've done. but bottom line what i have works great. and i can very much live with that and be satisfied. don't get the wrong idea. i love my truck and i'm happy with it. :thumbsup:
 






now with that being said. go with full width axles and a hp dana 44 up front. if i were to do it all over again thats how i'd go. right along with some 36x14.50 swampers

you guys been a huge help, but i still cant make up my mind! and its causing sleepless nights(not really)lol, the big question is solid or ttb? i dont know where to go, here are my 2 choices tell me what you think

1)keep the dana 35 ttb, get dual shocks, extended radius arms, 5.5" coils and run 35x12.50" tires, 4.56 gears
2)go with the dana 30 out of a jeep, run coil springs and around 7" of lift and run 35x12.50" tires, 4.88 gears

before you answer here is what i use my explorer for, it is my daily driver, this is my only truck/car/suv, mild offroading(ruts, hill climbs, few rocks, trails, mud, mud and more mud) highway driving (80mph)

and please dont say dana 44 with a 9" rear, im only 16 and funds are low

it would also help if you guys would post pic of 1st gens with 35's with 5+" of lift
