I am sorely tempted! A guy at work is selling a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the 4.0L I6 engine. Its in really nice condition, although it has almost as many miles on it as my Explorer (Jeep: 153,000, Ex:206,000). The Explorer is getting old (its a 92), so I'm thinking second car. I would not part with my Explorer! . The Ex is my only vehicle and daily driver. I'm really tempted to own two classic 4X4's: The Explorer and the Cherokee. The Jeep asking price is $3500 (about 500, too high).

Anybody have an opinion on the Cherokee? Are they good or should I forget it. Is Jeep really considered the "dark side"?

Thanks.

To me any Chrysler product is a no no. It's not just the sweet exhaust and coolant leaks they get, but also the quality of the interior. My best friend has a 96 grand cherokee, biggest POS I've been in.

apples and oranges...:D there have been a couple good X's listed on this sight in the last couple of days, that are decent for less then half that price with mods already up in your neck of the woods...;)

Thanks, guys, you have helped a lot!

I love classic 4X4's, but I'll stick with Ford, since I know how to repair Explorers (most of the time). Makes little sense anyway to have two 4X4's with over 150,000 miles on them... Probably asking for trouble:eek:

Great peer counseling keeping me on the straight and narrow:salute:

Jeeps=:thumbdwn:

I've owned a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and ever since I bought it, it was nothing but problems for me. I had some of the normal "replacement" parts for the engine that can just go bad over time, but I can't even type out a whole list of EVERYTHING that I fixed on it! Some of the things were the power steering pump, battery, the doors would not all lock themselves, (the interior sucked), the door somehow permanently closed itself shut and I couldn't get it open without breaking off the door and buying a used one from the junkyard, the security system was a joke because the wiring was all messed up. The jeep would sometimes not start because of this security system and if it did, I would shut off and start honking at me until I got out of the passenger side door, walk around the jeep and unlock the driver side door with my key and get back in..but then it would work!! All in all, it was just a pain in my rear.

I don't think I'll ever buy anything but a Ford ever again.

no frame, enough said :)

$3000 goes along way towards another Exploder then you can use the same parts on both!

maybe go 2 door?
Maybe Ranger or BII?

That $3500 would buy a 98-01 Explorer if you shopped around. The 91-94 Explorer is showing its age, and the 98-01's are becoming a bargain. Good luck,

I like Rangers, B-II's and Ex 2DR Sports! I don't see many B-II's here in NJ. I think road salt ate most of them. Curious, the Escape is almost the same size as the B-II and the Ex Sport. I wonder if they designed it that way on purpose?

that and they weigh less so they get better milage...:D

I wouldn't pay more than half that for an 11.5 year old XJ. They hold their value even worse than an Explorer.

Plus they're smaller, more cramped inside and worse build quality than Ford.

But it does have a solid axle up front

I dunno, I read that the V6 Escape gas mileage is about the same as the Explorer, maybe 2-3 mpg better.

What does a Bronco II do with the 2.9 L engine?

No Jeep for me. Temptation is gone, besides, another guy at work bought it.

Maybe I'll get a new Escape for a DD and keep the Ex as my classic car. I'm waiting for Fors to put the new 3.5L and the 6-speed tranny in the Escape.
Still, if a late model Explorer Sport, especially a manual one were to follow me home...;)

Bob

if you want a gas saver, get a ranger like i did...the older 4.0's sticks get almost as good as milage as i do, listed in my signature...when you go to auto, they tend to be down a few mpg...

Yes, I average 19 mpg with my 5-speed stick Explorer.

Plus, I think the Ranger is the only Ford 4X4 available with a stick.

bob, i was just at the dealership yesterday and seen some new escapes by the parts dept with the mpg tags...i was kind of surprised when i seen the sticker, 17city -23 hwy....i guess it's the new style sticker...but i really thought they would get alot better mpg's...

Yes, the EPA lowered the estimates on all cars to more "realistic" numbers, but that's about what the V6 Escape does. I read the mail on escape-central.com, and owners are reporting about 18-22 mpg average with the V6. I thought that the 3.0L should do better, so my guess is that the 4-speed transmission is not very efficient. The Escape would probably do better if Ford would put the new 3.5L V6 and 6-speed transmission in it.

(I guess if one wants 30 mpg one has to go to the hybrid or get a vehicle "less than 2": less than 2.0L engine, and car weight less than 2000 lbs!)

(That's why I keep my old Ex. :navajo: It gets 19 mpg and I'm not ready to downsize to a 4-banger and the smaller V6 SUV's are not that much more efficient than the Ex.)

umm not trying to harsh on ford or anything, but don't they have there problems too? i mena yeah i don't really like jeeps, but fords are known for haveing problems and breaking down too. all cars have there problems and all cars brake and suck like that. i think xj's are cool (but not for 3500$ though) but i just like ford for whatever reason it is (i honestly don't know, i just like em)

ok so none of this really matters since the car is sold anyways, but i guess i just get bored and start commenting on stuff like i know what im talking about hahahahahaha

oh yeah, and for a 4x4 ford truck, i would say a 4 cyl 5spd ranger reg cab. i hear people get 25 mpg with those all the time. and from what i've researched when i was looking for one, people say they get about 19 with a bii
