My 2002 XLT 4.0L has the "Service Engine Soon" light illuminated. I am not having any noticeable performance issues. Upon searching the forums and following the advice given I went to AutoZone where they hooked up and gave me the OBDII (Alpha) P Code of P0401 and P1401. 401 say the PCM determined there is insufficient flow in the EGR system and P1401 claims DPFE EGRCircuit high input. From my browsing it seem the likely culprit is the DPFE module but it could be the EGR Valve or the MAF sensor. How can I properly further diagnosis? Does anyone have illustration of the location of these possible culprits? Thank for your, I have enjoyed the site.

By searching for DPFE, you should find threads with links to pictures/diagrams of the DPFE and EGR and their location. When you find them, check and make sure the hoses have not come loose/melted/developed cracks. If they look fine, 95% of the time the DPFE is the culprit and replacing will remedy the problem. It's ~ $50 I think.

Depending on your mileage, campaign 02M01 extended the warranty on DPFE sensors to 75000 miles (I think, it's 100000 KM up here, I'm not sure about the US warranty).

Time to give back

Thanks, for the replys. I checked with two dealer and both told me the warr was extended to 60k mile ( I have 70K).

Rather then chase around I bought the part (# 4U7Z-9J460-AA) at the dealer for $32US. I had seen it on the net for $22.50 but was not sure I had the correct part.(Now I know the part number -others can order and save $10)

The dealer quoted me $190 plus tax for the repair (in fairness- it does include resetting the PCM) such a deal! In the '02 4.0L SOHC it appears to be a very simple repair, the part is 1.4 X 2.2 inches, located on left side near firewall, has no mounting hardware, one wiring plug (three contacts), and is merely pushed into two rubber hose about 3 and 4 inches long (these hoses connect to metal tubes that are about a foot long and connected into the exhaust pipe just below the mainfold).

I cannot immagine why the dealer think this is worth $190. It appear to be ten minutes worth of work. It might be they clean out the tubes???

I will follow up this post with hopefully a successful elimation of my CEL, and perhaps a picture to show that area of the motor bay.

Thanks to all

Too bad you're not in a green state, or it would be covered up to 74,000 miles... oh well. I can't understand why they would charge $190... seems like dealers are a rip off down there... too bad.

That was it

Replaced the sensor last night took 5 maybe 10 minutes. Reset codes and no CEL today! Here is a picture of the replaced module. Hope this will help someone else. Ya'll saved me $160, thanks.
Sorry I cannot post the pic here I will try in photo gallery...

Dealerships will charge a arm and a leg for a replacement wiper blade. But, glad it worked out for you. Was the old DPFE aluminum housing or plastic. Usually, stock, the DPFE is housed in aluminum, and when it gets hot the heat kind of fries it. That is why usually the replacement will be plastic because they noticed this after awhile. I've seen it on many Ford E-series Vans!

You got it. Had to replace mine last year. Dealers around me didn't offer the extended warranty story to me(not suprised). I don't remember the numbers, but it was a new part number that they gave me. That told me that they knew they had a problem with the old one. I paid around 35 for the part and hooked it up myself.

ok.. i have the same code p0401.. dont really know where to start.. im gonna try to figure out and research a little more to know what to do first... lol.. im only getting 15-16 mpg.. im hoping this may solve it. is 20 mpg about right? or no.?. 2002 v8 eddie bauer explorer

This thread is the number one hit on Google for P1401, shame on me for not looking here first. :)

I purchased a replacement DPFE module from RockAuto (STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # VP17T) for $16.87.

Received the replacement part today. That old module really, really, did not want to come out. I had to basically destroy the old module getting it out.

With the new module in place I cleared the code with my scan tool and took a 5 mile drive. No CEL! No new codes! :)
