Help with swapping a '93 tranny.

I have been searching and reading that these trannys are crap, but any advice would be appreciated. I have at least figured out it is a a4ld.

I am looking for info related to an auto tranny swap/replacement on a '93 4 door 4x4 with a 6cly. To be honest I don't know much about Explorers other then the 8.8 I swapped into my Jeep. I have a lot of expeirience with swapping Jeep motors, trannies, axles and t-cases so the mechanics of the job are with in my abilities. I just need to know what years will swap in and if there are any major hang ups in the swap. If any one can send a link to write up or links to a good source of rebuilts I would appreciate it. BTW, this Explorer is a family car that a friend just needs to get back on the road. I hope you guys can help.

I also realize a tech manual would answer some of my questions, but I need some quick responses because I want to convince him he does not need to spend $2200 for the shop to replace it.

I guess I should explain the problem too. Basically when he goes to put it in gear there is no tension on the shifter and sometimes it goes into gear, it is just all over the place. It actually sounds like a linkage issue. That's the best I can describe the problem.

First - Please don't duplicate threads.

I'd say check the linkage between the shifter and the tranny, and if it's alright, or if you adjust it to be in spec, and it's still causing trouble, you need a new tranny. I couldn't really tell you where to get a rebuilt or reman, honestly, I'm going to get rid of the A4LD problem altoghether.

Thanks, after reading a bunch of posts on this tranny I think a rebuild is needed and hopefully it will last this guy a year or 2.
