hi my friend borrowed my 98 XLT ex
and his backwheel was stuck in the ice and water (mush) but the frontwheel is on the gournd
anyway he tried to get out but cant he said only the backwheels were turning not the front but eventually got out of it....

i was wondering if XLT is 4x4 cause i heard the dealership said something to me that it is and XL is only 4x2.....

please help me out here cause im confuse and before i go to the ford delearship and slap the dude in the face for lying.....

4x4 is an option with any trim level. If you have the 5.0 V8 (which you probably don't), then you have computer controlled AWD: all-wheel drive. If you have a V6, 4x4 is evident by a switch on the dash and a bunch of added hardware under the truck. Since you don't know for sure if you have it or not, I'm guessing you don't. If you do, read your owners manual on how to use the 4x4.

I thought the AWD system works its "magic" without help from the computer.
 






My XLT is 4x2
 






If you have the 5.0 V8 with AWD, there will be no 4x4 switches. Easiest way to check if you have AWD is if there are driveshafts going to the front wheels....
