Help with tranny

Okay so i started my ex today and let it warm up as usual, now I shift into reverse and it cuts off.... why? I had already planned on changing the thermostat tomorrow because after my recent florida trip, on the way back whenever i came to a complete stop it would begin to overheat and now this. I already have to change the transmission cable as well and I am looking for tips on that.... Any help that can be offered would be great
