Hey everyone! I'm sure a lot of you are like me... I've read time and time again how to change the fuel filter, and how, once you learn the trick, it only takes minutes. I bought a tool at AutoZone several years back and tried to change mine using it, but never had any luck. My mechanic only charges me $20 to change it, so I've always paid him. Well, today, I decided that I'd change mine myself ($20 is $20, right?). I went to Advance Auto Parts and bought a new tool. I'm aware that several different types of tools exist, and that many people have a preference. With that in mind, the new tool I bought today worked wonders for me. Before trying to remove the filter, I tried the old "scissor like" tool, and still couldn't get it to work. I tried the new one, and it worked like a charm! Five minutes later and I had the fuel filter changed.

The above picture shows the two tools that I have. The one on the bottom is the one I bought at Advance Auto for $14.99. Sure, it's kinda pricey, but now I can do it myself and don't have to pay anyone else ever again.

Here's some more pictures of it. For future reference, they had two sizes in stock. For my 2000 Ford Explorer with the 5.0L V8, I needed the 5/16 inch one.

I just thought I'd post my experience and maybe it'd help someone else. Don't be afraid to do it, because it really is easy. Just remember that you can't pull on the filter itself, you have to pull the fuel lines AWAY from the filter once you have the tool in place. Also, I pulled the fuel pump relay and let the engine run till it died, but even so, a good bit of fuel still sprayed out. I was actually shocked by how much came out. So be prepared, and keep your eyes/face away from it. Goes without saying, but I said it anyway.

Yea, that red one you is the best for taking off "Quick Release" fittings. I learned this VERY quickly when replacing my fuel pump, ad filter.

Exactly! It took me maybe two minutes the first time I tried it to have one end of the filter off. Hopefully this will help someone else!
