I just wanted to introduce myself & say hi from Moab. Tomorrow I will take possession of a '91 XLT Explorer that I have some serious plans for. Basically when I get it where I'm thinking of the only original thing likely to be left on it will be some sheet metal & the frame. I currently have an '89 XLT Bronco that is pretty heavily modified & has been bouncing around all over the area for several years, it will still see it's fair share of offroad time but will likely be retired from some of the more extreme trails in favor of the Explorer.

Anyway, I hope to learn a lot about my new playtoy from those of you who have been dealing with Explorers for a while. I'm not totally inexperienced with the platform as I used to own a '90 Ranger Extended cab 4x4. Looking forward to getting to know some new people & possibly wheeling with some of you when I get the Explorer built up enough to run her.

Welcome!

Did you search? there are some serious rock rigs on this forum, and lots of runs in Moab

Welcome, I'm so jelious :( I just love it out there, if I could only find a way to move there.

Please keep us posted on your project, we have a section here (Offroad Explorer Projects) where you can start a thread as soon and you take delivery and start your work, here the link:

We're having a big run in Moab mid-May. Can we all stay at your house? :D

We meet at the City Market about 8 am, come out and play.

Welcome ;) I'm out of Silt so I'm always running Moab and Junction stuff. We go down probably about 10 times a year so you'll probably see me driving around Moab sooner or later.

Clint

Thanks for the welcome. I just got home with it a little while ago & seriously looked it over for the first time. I hadn't looked at it too closely before since it was being given to me for free. Overall it's in pretty good condition, no rust (showing at least), 4.0 litre engine, 3.73 gearing with factory LS in the rear, I've yet to determine if it has a front LS but I was told that it is supposed to. No fluid leaks.

It's problems: bad transmission (the reason is was free) it only has 1st & 2nd gears, the back doors won't open (no big deal, I'll probably remove them anyway), tires are worn out (again no big deal since they'll be changed to 35's anyway), the paint is faded & peeling (who cares anyway since it's going to be a playtoy), engine has a slight miss (if it stays it will be completely rebuilt, otherwise a 302 or 351 will be going in).

My basic plans: full width axles 9" rear & solid D44 front geared 4.56 if not more & fully locked, remove doors & rear hatch, exo cage, real bumpers front & rear made out of something that can actually take a hit, sliders capable of taking a hit, real skid plates protecting everything, transfer case doubler, OBA, 4 or 5 point harnesses for 4 seats (probably make the rear seats easily removable for when they aren't really needed). I'll definitely keep everyone here posted as to my progress on everything.

that thing is going to be a beast

Welcome to the site and keep us posted on your upgrades.

You did notice we will be having a big X run in mid May in Moab.

Yes I read about that a little. I need to post in that thread to clear up a couple of misconceptions. Just don't have enough time between my job & my online classes & the 4 other forums I'm active on. The classes will be done soon enough, but by then the weather should be pretty warm around here & I'll either be wheeling my Bronco or working on one of my vehicles.
