i was just wondering if people could post the milage, year, and what major parts have had to be replaced just so others can see what to expect when our mileage gets up there. i have a 1995 XLT with 78,000. Thanks
(ALso tips on making the Explorer last longer would be helpful!)

*New info: Now I have a 2001 Eddie bauer 5.0 shown at the right. It now has 71,000 on it. The 95 lasted me till 122K when I crashed it offroad (oops).
Lets see if the 2001 can double that! :)

95 sport 4x4 4.0 OHC V6
64,000 miles
Here is a list of everything that has been replaced.
Radio,
Speedometer head,
Throttle cable (twice)
Seat belt
fog light assembly.
engine thermostat

Repaired
cleaned Mass air flow sensor

Now whats wrong. Speedometer head again
CD changer won't work. Need a new one. 4X4 Low keeps popin. Heard it was usual though for it to feel like the front axle is coming out form under the explorer. Radius arm bushing needs replaced.

It's been in to be fixed more than it's been drove as it seems. Any else have this problem.

I have a 91 4.0 w/150,000

I have had to replace the clutch, clutch slave cylinder, fuel pressure rgulator, o2 sensors, plugs and wires. I haven't really had too much trouble with the engine-except for the bad gas mileage which was for the most part cured from replacing the sensor and regulator- but most of my problems have been with the tranny. What a pain!! I am thinking about getting an auto put in and have a B&M automatic shifter put in to get rid of that stupid clutch which I have had most of my problems with. Well I guess some tips would be get all your tune-ups done on schedule and maybe even before schedule if you drive off road. And just take care of it by washing it and waxing it to keep the paint nice and shiny, and cleaning the inside to prevent damage to it. I have kept my interior nice and it practically looks brand new.

'91 Explorer, 4-Door, XL, 5-spd Mazda trans, 4x4, 4.0L, A/C, Tow package, 250,000 miles

Likes:
Comfortable
Plenty of room(Wife, 4 kids and I, plus accompanying travel gear)
Plenty of power(yes I have towed through the Rockies)
Extremely reliable, excepting trans

Dislikes:
Trans: geartooth broke at 150K had to replace all bearings, input shaft, and countershaft, and now 100K later it is acting up again(could just be clutch since it has never been replaced, though it feels worse than just the clutch)

Things it has needed:
Oil&filter change every 3K
Tune-up every 10K
Misc. fluid changes every 25K
Radius Arm bushings per TSB
Battery cable & box per TSB
Rear window replaced due to neighborhood vandals
4 door handle pulls(4 kids are rough on them)
Three sets of tires
Windshield wipers & lots of fluid(It's sure fun to get it in condition to need that much fluid)
1 speeding ticket(OOPS)
Engine still runs great but since I have to pull the trans I will freshen it while it is out.

No, I haven't done any mods yet(It's the family car until the '64 Fairlane is finished), BUT I am looking forward to what I get to do to it soon. I wouldn't trade it. Oh yeah, I would get another in a heartbeat(old body style, of course).

I just bought my 1992 Eddie Bauer Explorer about four months ago, it has 193,000 miles on it so far. I have been completely happy with it so far.
I have taken it in and had the following done,
-new front rotors
-new brake calipers
-new rear axle seals
-new starter
-new battery cables
-new shocks
-new tires
note: except for the starter and battery cables I bought the vehicle knowing that the other parts needed to be replaced.

1997 V6 XLT Controltract, SOH, 73,250 millage
- K&N Drop-in Air Filter
- Flowmaster muffler

New Brakes -(front and Rear)
New Tires - (Michellin M/S LTX)
New Plugs

Thats it! Everything works good.

91' xlt 4.dr
puchaced in 97'

[part's replaced]
rear steel brake line
R/A bushings
shocks
31x10.5 wide conquorer A/T
I will never sell my explorer
runner

1991 XLT 4 X 4 158,000 km

1) flex plate (flywheel) 2 times. Big bucks.
2) auto hubs 2 times (went to manual)
3) front rotors
4) radius arm bushings 2 times (went to polyurethane)
5) U-joint
6) voltage regulator
7) front/back brakes 2 times
8) lower ball joints
9) spark plug wire 2 times
10) starter motor

And what's next you ask.

1) replace leaky radiator and hoses
2) replace top drivers' door hinge
3) roof needs repainting/clearcoating
4) alternator
5) slight leak at power steering pump
6) u-joints might need to be replaced again

Would I buy another Explorer. I honestly don't know.

doo doo happens

Well, I have to list items that were not caused by my extreme off-roading, since that certainly is not the trucks fault.

93 Eddie Bauer 4-door (highly modified)
86,000 miles

transmission servo
thermostat
fan clutch (fried by frozen thermostat)
fan (partially melted by frozen thermostat)
radius arm bushings (no longer have them)
transmission mount
brakes
front wheel bearings

Thats about it.

1992 XLT 4 wheel drive 185,000miles

What we replaced becuase we needed to (other than tune up stuff):

Tranny rebuild @ 165,000 miles
Radius Arm bushings
O2 sensor
Brake calipers and rotors (do the rotors every 2 times I change the pads)
replaced A/C lines (were leaking slightly)

What we replaced becuase we wanted to:
Added 2.5" lift
Added 8.5" shackles
Rs9000 shocks
Gears (3.27 to 4.10)
Detroit Locker in rear
Warn manual hubs

What we are about to change:
Alternator... its making noise when cold.

Other than radius arm bushing problem which were solved by the Lift (it moves the bushing away from the Cat) we have not had any chronic problems.

'93 XLT 105,00 mi

Replaced:
Radius Arm Bushings
Thermostat
Rear axle seals
Trans filter
Spark plugs
Brake pads & shoes
Shocks
Muffler
Belt
Fuel filter
Air filter (got K&N)
3000 mi oil and filter changes

I think that is everything.....

'92 EB auto 115k

non service items replaced:

AL4D @140k Dead Link Removed
P/S pump (leaking)
Fan (had cracks)
voltage regulator
Most gaskets (done under warranty)
auto hub (manual is next)
temp sender (after replacing two good thermostats)

I'd lke to replace the fake idiot oil temp gage (nope, they are not real gages! Ford engineer confirmed this on Truck Haven trip)

summation:
I love my truck, it has been really reliable. No vehicle runs forever w/o some tlc. Except for trans, I think everything has held up fine so far! I recommend them!

i have a 91 w/ 173,000
the only problems i have had are the engine was replaced at 150,000, and the wheels at 165,000. the engine didn't need to be replaced, but it needed a little work and my dad found a better deal on replacing the whole engine. i wish it would have been mine back then, i would have put in a v8. the wheels had to be replaced after an off-road incident.
