Current conditions:
1996 4R70W with 172,000 on the clock.
Leaking slightly and haven't found it yet.
Getting a little TC lockup shudder with a B&M ShiftPlus "ON" - no noticeable shudder when "OFF" (yet).
Fluid does not smell burnt, but does not smell fresh, either.
My research shows:
* This tranny came with Mercon III,
* I've read that Mercon V can cause old seals to leak, especially if changing from III,
* I've read that Mercon V is recommended for the 4R70W, even if it means changing from III.
My intentions:
* Change filter & fluid with a "pan change" only,
* Install a plug in the pan in order to do multiple "pan changes" over the next few hundred miles (an attempt to prevent a 'clean & clog' brought on by a full change),
* Add LubeGard's Shutter Fix on the first and last "pan change".
My Questions:
1. Given the current condition (Mercon III & leak), would I be better off sticking with Mercon III, and adding friction modifiers?
2. If I stay with III, is the Shutter Fix enough additive, or is there something better?
3. If I were to go with Mercon V, a) can I expect more leakage, and b) do additives help with "V"?
Thanks ! !
