Subject line says it all. I have to hit the 4x4 button at least 50 some odd times till it engages the transfer. on/off/on/off/on/off/on etc etc, continue till finger is bloody red stump.,,,sad monkey, The 4x4 indicator light says it's in 4 wheel drive but it lies. I can tell when it really engages by the sound of it. So I sit there like an Apollo 2 space monkey pushing the button repeatively till I get my 4x4 treat. We looking at a transfer case replacement thread here or what?

Welcome to the site. I am not too sure on your problem. Have you tried searching? It may just be a bad connection somewhere?

Had the prob in my 88 B2, I replaced the hubs with manual hubs, anbd it worked fine after that, but you may want to search, b/c hubs can get expensive. The Auto locking hubs on the older trucks have plastic rings that engage the 4x4, and they break, easily.
Later,
Shaun

How long do you hold the button down,in my ex i push the button then count to 2 then release and it inguages everytime,I used to just push it quick and had about a 50 -50 chance of enguaging.Just my 2 cents:D

Thanks for the welcome Taxxman!

hmmm, hold button down 2 secs, I'll give it a try.

I forgot to mention, after 4x4 engagement I get a very loud klunk from the front end somwhere. It happens like clockwork every 10 seconds. Klunk/10secs/klunk/10secs etc, etc.., Then when I come to a stop sometimes it makes a whizzing sound and does a final klunk. Very odd. I plan on upgrading transfer/gears/suspension/tires soon if that helps.

Muskrat might be on the right track here.... Maybe its the plastic part thats worn and failed on the auto hub locker so upgrading to manual hub locks might fix it.

Your auto hubs are probally shot along with your axel u-joints:(

Replacing IFS with axle I guess then.

I love it when a plan comes together, I plan on doing the same in my stx, eventually

try looking for the page (servicing the elec motor) My motor had to be changed. It was not hard at all maybe a 1/2 oe so.
The one a got was off i F150 i think it was a little bit longer but still fits and works great.
Hope this helps.

I just read over the Dana conversion to front solid axle. Seems a bit overwhelming for myself. Looks like a level 9 on the 1-10 difficulty scale. I was looking for about a 5. How costly and difficult are U joints to change, also gotta change the the auto hub locks to manual.

Where might I find info on this conversion?

do a search on both they are really not that bad just time consuming one of the u-joints on the drivers side I think is really tough the spline does not want to come out of the pumpkin I just changed it whil it was on the truck
