Hood Insulation/Sound Deadener

I was curious if anyone had removed the insulation under the hood. I understand that it quiets the engine noise and protects the hood from the engine heat, but I was wondering if it would cause a great deal of difference if I took it off. Would the engine be that much louder? Also, would the hood paint be damaged by the heat? Just wondering guys because I wouldn't mind if my engine sounded louder.
