Help,

When I bought my 1993 Ford Explorer it had no radio. I found a Dolby B NR Mode PN 99961 Radio Cassette player in the thrift store. Now, I dont know hoe to wire it up in my truck.

On the back of the Radio/Cassette, which one of the sockets is the power and which one is the speakers.

I know which is power and speakers on the Explorer. Just can't figure out which is which on the radio/cassette.

Also, I would appreciate it if anyone knows what type of car it came from.

There is a sticker which says inspected in 1999.

Help please. I dont want to guess and fry my $5.00 Radio. lol

That prob would require finding what car that deck originally came from, getting diagrams, and splicing it all together. Prob best getting one from an explorer from a junkyard

Just go buy a cheap CD player stereo at your local electronics store. I got this one at Best Buy for $59:

JVC CD Player

Get a harness kit and it will plug right in. Super simple and a nice upgrade.

Otherwise...I have the stock AM/FM Cassette that came out of my 94...it would plug right into your harnesses (I recognize them) but I think it would cost $15-$20 to ship to you.

I agree with leftoverture. A different cheap deck would be an easier plan. Some new ones are getting really affordable, especially units without CD players. I have seen them as low as $30 if you don't mind not having a CD option. Or look on Craigslist for used ones. Another possibility is self service junkyards. My favorite head unit is a Clarion ProAudio that I got from Pick-N-Pull for $25 with the original remote. Or you could find a stock Explorer head unit for even cheaper; then the plugs would all be factory too. Any Ford radio around that time frame would work. A member of this forum may be willing to give you their factory radio for the shipping price. I would, if I knew where I put mine :D

The main reason I suggest a new head unit is that without the plugs that go into the back of your deck, you're off on a wild goose chase to find the right one. They are often model specific. You'd have an easier time buying mini female spade connectors from Radio Shack and sticking them onto the pins on your head unit. But even then you'd have to find a pinout for that specific radio, and good luck on that.

Yep, he can have it for the shipping cost!

Hey, Thanks for your response to my blog. I just looked at your pictures. Nice Explorer. And, beautiful country.

My 1993 Explorer has about 250,000 miles. And, since I repaired the PCM and a few other things, it runs good.

There is a clicking noise that I am not happy with, but, the Explorer is great for driving around the neighborhood and short trips to stores, etc.

Think I will kee up the research on the Dolby radio and see where it leads. I only paid 5.00 for it. So, no great loss. But, it is something to play with.

Could you ship it COD, as I have no money in my PayPal? I would appreciate it very much.

After buying this Radio, and researching it on the net, I see a potential problem looming over the horizon, would it be locked out with a code. lol

Possible, I could wire it up and not be able to use if correct code is not put in.

Im not sure about this. And, car Stereos is one of my week spots.

I think I could make it work if I knew which one of the sockets is the power, and which one is for the speakers. I took it apart for clues, but, no help.

Is the smaller female interface with the fewer pins the power or the speakers. The smaller one almost fits the harness plug on my Explorer, and that plug is the speaker connection.

Or, is the larger interface or female connector the power or speaker connectors.

Sorry to sound so dumb, but this is not my strong point. And, I want to take precautions not to fry something. lol

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks.

You should able to look up all the wire colors for the harness, or get the adapter for an aftermarket system so you don't have to splice into the explorers harness, but still you need to figure out what the radio you have comes from so you can figure out its wiring.

I still think you are best getting a cheap aftermarket (used or new) or if you don't need cd player just get the factory radio.

Thanks for response, I appreciate it very much. I have spent a few hours on the internet, Ebay and Amazon trying to find an identical radio without success.

And, far as I know, there is nothing on the radio itself which indicates which car it came out of.

I will keep plugging along until something happens.

Now, I have a small speaker with amplyfier and a ipod to listen to audio books when driving around. lol

You also have the possibility that HU is designed to work with an external factory amp.
Using the number on the cassette door looks like it could be a Nissan HU. The lettering looks the same as other HU's I see for Altima's.

Thanks,

I will check it out. I have spent a few hours scrolling through car radios on ebay and the web. Found some close, but not exact.
