I noticed no difference with my flowmaster or my k&n filter. But I wasn't really worried about it either. I got it mainly just to make noise. :D Some people have had good mileage improvements by switching to synthetics.

pump up your tires.

Keep in mind it's a 1st gen, & it's 12+ years old. Many of the recommendations in a lot of gas threads here simply do not gain much on a 1st gen due to design differences.
There are things that can be done when all is combined that will net you a few MPG's but nothing that's going to make a big difference.
Increase air pressure, be easy on the throttle, & ac off, make the biggest differences.
One does not expect great gas millage from a 4wd, 12+ year old, 4K+lb, 160hp suv.

after the exhaust and intake, i noticed a couple more mpg difference so it was worth it for me

hey buddy

don't give up. every car can do better mileage even if its a heavy, slow suv like the explorer.

after exhaust and intake get a chip from bama and switch to synthetic(engine, axles and transmission).

don't go over 2000rpm between every gear change and keep the speed 60- in the highway.

let us know the results

my 92 x must be a freak of nature, this past weekend i drove to seaside, oregon on the coast,FROM bend oregon, little under 300 mile one way trip for me,even going over 2 mountain passes,i still averaged 22mpg

i filled up in longview washington, and drove down to albany oregon{99% flat roads and highway speeds the whole way} i got 24 mpg.

around the city of longview{which is sea level} i was getting about 18 mpg average for city driving, around my town{bend oregon} i average around 15mpg city, and around flat 20s for highway, mostly due to the higher elevation. my x only has 92k miles on it though.

edit, mine is also 100% bone stock

Sticks get better gas mileage. Auto's just suck it up. Depends on your stock gearing as well.

My thoughts...(scary eh?)

I average about 23 to 24 MPG on the highway with mine. In town I average aroung 15 MPG. The only thing I have done to it is replace the muffler with a Flowmaster 40 series in the stock location. Nothing else, everything else is stock. Mine is also 2wd with 3.73 gears. I also keep my foot out of it. I try to keep it under 3000 rpm. I use the cruise when I am on the hwy except in hilly areas. The cruise will cause it to use more in hills because it can't predict throttle usage like you can. It just adds gas to keep speed and my always
ADDS a lot when it hits a hill. It is VERY aggressve on my 98. I always fill up at the same pump on level ground to make sure I get close to accurate gallon amounts of actual usage. When I go on trips I average to total of all my fillups so it is more accurate.

I want to ride my bicycle.... I want to ride my bike.......

While I agree that you can gain some mpg's you have to weigh in the price factors. If you have to spend $1,000-$2,000 for the mods to gain a few mpg's or even 5mpg's then it is not worth it. Try some of the free or low cost mods and tips.
I would start off checking all your stock parts first.

Honestly, i really dont pay that much attention, and just fill up when i need to. Fist off, my gas guage shows over 1/4 tank lower than the actual fuel level. When it's on E i still have about 7.5 gallons left in the tank. Also, i hate granny driving, i'm a hardcore lead foot. Lastly, i have 31's with stock gears....that doesnt help.

i have gotten 26 going back and forth to school at 50mph. i have no muffler but still have the stock cats and a cone type air filter. my sister's Kia gets 25 i love it

270k miles....Just put a cold air intake on 3-4 months ago. Maybe another mile with it.
I get 20mpg in the city.
