Sticks get better gas mileage. Auto's just suck it up. Depends on your stock gearing as well.

Yes, my 92 XLT has the stick and the 3.27 gears. I average 19 mpg combined city/highway. EPA rating was 17 city/ 21 highway, so I'm right in the middle. The Ford Escape with the 3.0L V6 and auto trans does not do much better. I'm waiting for the Hybrid Explorer!

i think there is a thread on here about adding acetone in to your gas. but they tested that on myth busters and it did not help. they also did a test on driving habbits and the person with the led foot got like 30% worse mpg or something like that. My mom has a '92 explorer and she only gets 14 MPG. So i beleave it is more the driver then what you can do to your car. I go to this place called the Skills Center for half my day to learn to work on cars, i asked my teacher how much MPG an explorer gets wide open and he said 6 MPG so i would guess you can't get much worse then 6.

another tip for you guys,i jsut did this with 2 mileage checks, the results are amazing.

i pulled the stock mechanical fan off and shroud, and put a late 80s early 90s ford taurus 2 spd eelctric fan on,so far...ive seen 3mpg,my highway trip on pretty flat ground thus far showed me 27mpg there, and 26.6 on the way back.

less weight = better mileage

weight loss 101
1.) clean out your car
2.) fill up your tank halfway
3.) go on a diet

I get 12-14 in my 96, so I guess I'm the "lead foot" type of guy:) :)
