I need to know what is involved in replacing a 4X4 relay module on a 2002 explorer XLT. I am looking for step by step details. I had my 4X4 module replaced at a ford dealer for $500.00 and a few months later my a/c and heater damper does not go from hot to cold (or from cold to hot) unless I turn the motor speed dial from low to 3 or 4. Also the top of my dash has developed a very irritating rattle. Could this all be caused from my dash not being put back together properly?

Many thanks!!

Sorry to hear that you got nicked for $500 to replace the 4X4 Control Module. It's about a $160 part and takes all of 15 minutes to replace. It's not likely that replacing it caused your new problems though. The 4X4 CM is right behind the glove box and doesn't require removing any dash parts to replace. It can all be done right through the glove box after it's dropped down out of the way. If you want to see for yourself, open the glove box and squeeze the sides of the box inward and then push it in and let it drop down. The CM is right there.

The blower motor resistor is located right behind the 4X4 CM, but if that had been damaged during your repair I don't think it would affect the blend door. The blower motor resistor controls the fan speed. Does your fan work on all settings?
