I'm replacing the power steering pump in my 2002 Explorer XLT 4x4 4.0. I'd like to flush the entire PS system when I do it and I'm wondering how much total fluid I'll need. Also, is there any special type I need to use? Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the info?

Thanks!

32 ounces of Mercon ATF or Mercon V should suffice after replacing your P/S pump. Tires off the ground, remove the return line, and cap the reservoir. Place the return line in a small bottle and slowly turn lock to lock keeping the reservoir filled until the fluid runs clear. Just in case, buy 2 quarts and return one if unopened. Valvoline Mercon V synthetic blend.

EDIT- Sorry, excuse my senior moment. With a new P/S pump it is certain you will need to crank or run the engine in short intervals to remove any air. Having a second person would help a lot. With the wheels off the ground you can purge the air easily by turning the wheel stop to stop with the engine running in neutral. Holding on the stops is hard on the pump.
