How Often Does Someone Attempt To Hack Your Comp? What Do You Have To Stop It.

Were deciding between Norton and McAfee(sp?) for our anit-virus. What do reccomend for best hacking protection. We will soon be running a Netgear router between two (possibly three) computers. Me and XP (3rd win 98). With the antivirus, how secure will our computers be? Thanks for any replys and for taking the time to read this.

I've had no problems whatsoever from McAfee. The viruses I had gotten though e-mail and such were caught and deleted immediately. It's been nothing but great for me.

When we went to cable I hooked up a DLink Router that has built in firewall software so I could network all the comps in my house. .

Is your DLink the wireless router? If so...isn't it awesome? I have three computers in my house running on Verizon DSL from the DLink wireless router and it (knock on wood) hasn't failed yet! and yes....i remember getting attacked many times when someone left the DSL open all day. luckily my zone alarm kicked them out..... but I'm sure the popularity of the DLink will probably be it's demise......someone will find a way around all of this.....

I don't know about the two anti-virus programs, but my perception is that either one will be good provided you get regular updates so that it will scan for the most current viruses.

The router will help protect against hacking because they usually have a built in firewall plus they have NAT (network address translation) to hide your local IP address from the outside world.

If you want to be even more protected, you can also run a software firewall on each computer in case someone is able to get past your router and guess your local IP.

I have a router plus a software firewall because it is included with the operating system (Mac OS 10.2) and did not cost me anything. I also have Virex anti virus software which was included with my .Mac account
