random no starts

Getting stranded in 1998 Mountaineer 4x4.

First time replaced the fuel filter next morning, and started fine. Thought problem solved.

But since then still randomly won't start. If it starts it runs fine until next time need to go someplace.

This used to happen very infrequently. Now its not starting most times.

Went thru the no start procedure.

Was not starting at beginning of procedure.

1. With key in off position Theft blinking slowly, when on position on solid, as cranking on solid for a second or two then goes off.

2. has 1/2 tank of fresh gas and ran fine first 1/2 tank.

3. when turning key from off to on, can hear both fuel relay click and pump running for a little while.

4. Check engine is lit, but goes off when cranking.

5. starter cranks very fast.

6. check engine turns off when cranking.

7. battery fully charged on charger prior to beginning procedure

8. TPS - didn't get this far due to engine is running again. stopped, restarted half dozen times. drove around block. runs good. sounds good. has power.

Help?!

P.S. Tried both keys that came with vehicle at beginning and would not start using either key.

It was the fuel pump. worked 99% of the time but like once per month the engine would not start.

decided to replace the pump and have not had any trouble since.

I was thinking fuel pump before I even read the thread...
