how to install a stereo

I am looking at the pioneer DEH-P4700MP. How do I go about install this without cutting wires so I can put the stock back in if I sell the X. I want to add the ipod adapter as well. What wiring harness and installation kit would I need? Thanks

You should be able to find a wiring harness adapter at any Radio Shack or stereo shop. Maybe even a Wal-Mart. There are several new radios at Crutchfield that are compatible with IPOD adapters and if you buy your deck from them it will come with the wiring harness adapter. You can also enter your vehicle and they will let you know what will fit without modifications.

You will need a dash kit, wiring harness. If your deck has IP Bus connector, you can buy a conversion cable online for $30 that turns the IP Bus into input RCAs, then you can hook up your iPod

I was planning to buy the ipod adapter that goes with the stereo HU that pioneer makes. Does the harness connect to the plug on the car?

Yes, the harness will connect to the plug on the car. Easiest way to do it is to make connections to your aftermarket headunit inside the house or someplace. Use wire connectors or solder. If you twist and tape you will redo later because a connection will more than likely come loose. Then it just plugs into the factory plug.

so i guess cutting wires is involved? What if I go to sell the car and want to the headunit and replace with the stock system, can I put the old stereo back in?

the wire cutting they are talking about you will have to do on the harness you buy. you wont have to cut anything on your stock harness. so yes you will be able to re-install your factory stuff very easy. i just recently did this with a pioneer 6700, and its very easy.

No, you get a harness for your specific vehicle. Just go to a stereo shop and tell them what you need.

well i bought the HU and ipod adapter...the wiring harness and dashkit still to come. I was looking at the ipod adapter. Where do you make the power and ground connections? Do you solder it in with the HU power to the harness?

yes, just add it to the constant (yellow) and ground (black) wiring behind the deck

basically a wire harness is there to prevent you from having to cut the wires in your car

the harness "connector" is specific to your vehicle, while the wires have to correspond to those of your head unit. the way you install them is use the wiring guide that comes with the harness and the unit to match the wires for power, right, left, back right, back left, etc. from unit to harness. when its done, the harness will simply plug right into the car's harness where the factory stereo used to plug in. this saves you having to solder inside your dash, and gives you the ability to reinstall the factory unit if you ever want to sell your car, or your aftermarket receiver breaks.

Ok now Im ready to install my stereo got the harness and everything...on the harness is a wire for the dimmer and amp ground, I don't have either of them so should i just tape the ends on them?
