So this may sound dumb to some of you but i have never pulled an engine before. Does anyone know of any thread with a how to with pictures for step by step of pulling the engine out of an explorer (1st or 2nd gen) on this site or any other. I have found multiple lower milage explorers (1st gens) some with "bad trannys" and some with "bad engines" that im sure i could pick up for a couple hundred bucks a piece. I would like to start a project but it would be completely on my own. I would really like the experience. If someone did a "How To: Pull Your Engine" with pics that sure would be a useful sticky around here..........

The engine is connected with 2 engine mounts. Some parts like the A/C compressor, water pump, and P/S pump have hoses connected to them. You have fuel lines, wiring harnesses, and bolts connecting to the tranmission, and torque converter. You could make a step by step how to thread on this. It should be quite interesting. Everything is pretty much straight forward once you start disconnecting everything.

Go get a Haynes repair manual for the Explorer ($15-$20). It has a step by step process in it. Biggest thing is to label EVERYTHING that you disconnect for re-assembly purposes. Pulling an engine isn't complex, you just have to make sure you disconnect everything before pulling.

I have a Hanes but i did not know there is a step by step in there. I was reading through the timing chain section in my Hanes and noticed the frist step is "pull the engine", kind of an important first step huh......ill check that out. thanks

+1000 on label everything! but people seem to over, complicate it.

eng removal 101, generic eng R&R things ive learned
remove the battery
there is usually a large wiring bulkhead connector, dont bother unhooking all the connectors on the eng
LABEL VACUUM LINES and be careful they get brittle
pull the fan and radiator, this way you dont have to but a new radiator when you put your fan through it :)
unbolt the ac compressor and tuck it away in the eng bay (dont disconnect the lines)
do the same for the power steering
2 heater hoses
trans bell housing bolts 6-8~ish
torque converter nuts
starter
motor mounts
hook up chain
pull
