I would like to put a second gas tank in my Explorer. When I'm towing a boat a long distance it seems like I'm always stopping for gas. Does anybody know of a kit for putting a second tank in an Explorer? Or does anyone have a good idea how I might fabricate one? Has anyone else put a backup tank in an X? I know I could carry a gas can but that is not what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Mike H.

Do a search. I pretty sure the "Zimmermans" added a gas tank.

I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Thanks anyway.

Tom Rios (FAKRWEE) has a 30 gal tank installed in his truck. Try emailing him and ask him where he got it.

Like Ray say's I installed a 30 gal. replacement tank were the original was. I had the same problem, I was towing a trailer on vacation and had to plan my route by gas station availability. Mine was made by a company out here in So. cal. You have various options.
1-I can get you the name of the Company in Ca. and you can replace your existing one.
2-You can move your spare tire out and install one in that compartment. Which what I currently have. Or :D
3-You can buy mine. It's in great shape and I'll give you a hell of a price. New cost over $650.00 It also has a skid plate. If your going to Truckhaven you can avoid shipping cost. I'll be leaving tomorrow.

Hope this help's.

Ray I'll see ya in TH :bounce:

Tom are you trying to say yours is for sale, the one that goes in place of the spare tire?

HOW MUCH?

No Pos, the one I'm selling is a 30 gal. replacement tank that fit's in the factory location. I'm keeping the 28 gal. tank that sit's were the spare tire used to go. Sorry :(

Tom,

I'm interested. I sent you a PM and an email.

Michael, I sent you an e-mail. Let me know if you recieved it and comments.

tom.. where did you get the one that fits in the spare tire area? also, could you give me the name of the place that you got the 30 gallon replacement from? i hate having this little 17 gallon tank in my sport.
if you have two tanks now, do you have a switch to go to the other tank or something, or does it all just flow together somehow? thanks!

Jason I removed the 30 gal. replacement tank when I installed the one in the rear spare carrier location. 28 gal. in the rear was enough. You can have both if you want. The name of the company that fabed it is Aero Enterprises in Corona Cal. They have a high quality but expensive product. Web site www.aerotanks.com
Hope this helps.

thanks.. just sent you an email

Mine was the first 2 dr. they did and I think the only one, that's why it's not in their catalog. I took it in and they took the measurements. What they do is build the tank to fill in all the empty space around the factory tank so the new tank is actually taller, wider and longer.
With the skid plate the thing is bullet proof.

curtis...
i emailed him that same question. he said it was customized for him. he can tell you more than me though. i hate the little 17 gallon tank.

ok... nevermind.. i see i am too slow :)

I've only seen custome 2nd tanks on explorers.. never any kits.. BUT.. here is a 30 gallon replacement (replaces the stock 20ish one)..

It goes in the stock location.. but I don't remember the price..

Dead Link Removed

Ok..Let me get this straight

You buy the replacement tanks from Dead Link Removed that is a (30g) you then take the original and move it to the back were the spare use to be? And mount the new (30g) in the original tanks spot So...lets say space 1 (original tank)
space 2 (Spare tire spot)
Take (30g) and place it in space 1
Take original and place in space 2

Please correct me if I am wronge

ruzztec...
the 30 gal from them replaces the stock one. i believe you will have to get one custom done for the spare tire area.

You take your stock one out.. put in the aero tank.. and now you have a spare tank sitting in your garage.. To put a tank in the spare tire area is a custom job.. a local tank shop (they build tanks) quoted me close to $500 for just the tank.. This doesn't include switches/valves/sending unit/fuel pump etc..

If you only want 5 or 10 gallons at teh most.. you could always put in a fuel cell.. and just make custom brackets.. but you still have to buy the sending unit/fuel pump, switches and valves..
