How to remove piece on rear bumper

How do you remove the piece on the back bumper, the back piece with the square pattern which acts as a step? I do not even know what it is called. I would like to take mine off and refinish it with some spray on bed liner to give it a better black look, kind of faded now. Anyone have pictures as to how to remove? I tried to pull it off but it wasn't budging and I didn't want to pull to hard and break anything.

It pulls up and off. There are five or six "pins" that push into the bumper. They are molded along with the step pad, so be careful or you will snap them off. You can probably get a scraper under it to get I started. You will be able to see the pins, they run down the center of the step pad. Oh, and two push pins on the vertical piece at the ends.
