how to reset digital compass?

hello,

i'm new here and had a question. just bought the wife an 02 explorer xlt a couple of weeks ago and driving around i noticed that the compass always reads NORTH. got to looking in the manual and it says sometimes they need re calibrated. but the instructions mention a set of buttons our truck doesn't have.
how would i go about resetting or recalibrating it without these buttons?

could it be as simple as un hooking the battery for a few minutes?

What buttons is it suggesting you use and what do you have in the way of buttons?

My '03 has a compass receiver attached to the rear view mirror and a button to initiate calibration completing with the Setup, Info, and Reset buttons on the dash.
