How to 'tap' ducting?

How does one "tap" an existing duct?

This is the current setup and I need to tap the duct on top (green arrow) and put a register at the bottom (green box) to the next room.

There are a couple of different ways to do it. First, you can buy a pre-made flange from your home improvement store, cut a hole in your duct, and then screw the flange over the hole and run your drop down to the vent. Or, you can make your own flange out of a piece of ductwork (preferrably square, it's easier to deal with.) Cut each corner back about 1-1.5" and bend the edges back to form a flange. Then cut a hole in the duct to match and use machine screws to hold it in place. You can either use duct tape, or silicone sealant to seal it from leaks.

The third way is to call a buddy who does it for a living, and pay him a couple of brews to do the job. :p:

As to CG's question about finishing, that's important because it will help drive the type and sizing of the duct you are installing.

Cut a hole in the exsisting duct work. Fit the collar and bend all the tabs then seal it with a duct sealer.

Iz what is in this space, are the walls going to be finnished out?
The wall you're seeing in that picture is the back of another room's wall. The back of that wall will probably left as it is.

JDraper and Heavymentill -- thanks for the suggestions :D I'll see what Home Depot has.

But one more question, how does one make a hole? With a grinder? Sorry for being so new here :D

ducting is relatively thin

draw a hole for the location with a sharpie
a sharp punch or a drill can be used to pierce through the sheet metal
then just complete the cutout hole with tin snips or nibblers

Connect one of these:

Then finish with this:
