Been lurking here a bit and reading all the threads that have helped me out with different problems over the last couple of years. The login keeps reminding me that I have not posted, so I am saying hello.

So first:
Want to say thanks to all the people who have taken many photographs during teardowns and rebuilds. How do you keep your camera clean? There is a ton of great material here and it didn't get there without a lot of hard work. So thank you and thank you again.

The current problem:
I have a 93 Explorer XLT 4 door with 335,000. Pulling a lightly loaded utility trailer over a pass last night apparently caused the front seal to fail completely as it was dumping massive amounts of tranny fluid.

I replaced the transfer case at 245K with a used one and no problems with 4wd since then. The car has had to endure a lot of towing ( sometimes very heavy loads as in a 5-6 K total trailer weight). Lots and lots of towing in the 1,000 lb range for long and short distances and rough roads. And lots of 4wd hiway driving and dirt road, low gear dirt road stuff.
What I am saying is that the only surprise to me is that the tranny didn't fail earlier. I abused it and did so happily. This car is great.

So I have found a replacement; A used tranny with a 60 day warranty for $650. Unknown mileage on the trans. Pretty reputable recycler. He said they drain the oil and red flag the tranny if any metal comes out. If it is clean they sell it. He recommended changing the front and rear seal and the filter.

After reading through some of the rebuild tutorials on here I figured I could take some time and redo mine but without having to hurry so much. ( My wife drives a 91 which I am almost certain has the same tranny as mine). So the rebuild would be ready for her car or mine if we have another tranny problem.

My experience is that I have rebuilt a couple of car engines, lots of dirt bikes and my DOHC GPz 550 Kawasaki. Lots of other stuff too, but that is some of the majors.

Any thoughts or input, I didn't see a guide to straight up removal and install but I think I can handle that even without the manual. ( Mine disappeared but will get another if necessary).

Thanks in advance for reading if you made it this far,
Jerry

Welcome to this forum! Follow the A4LD rebuild diary, and post any questions you might along the way. You are very lucky to get this much use out of it. How many miles does the 91 have?

I know I am lucky but I also try to be smooth.

About 240K on the 91 and it is still shifting pretty well. Runs strong too. Little Eddy Bauer 2 dr.

thanks for the Welcome BB. I will follow the diary. Still hard to believe what a great resource this is.
