It could be a simple as a thermostat. How many miles and what the price?

does it run? if it overheated then it could be possible the heads cracked or warped. something these motors are notorious for. Like what was mentioned above it could be just be a stuck thermostat.

ask him if he could put a new thermostat in it (its like 50 bucks) and have him add it on to the cost. if it runs fine with no overheating then its definatly a go. I got 179k on my 92 4.0L right now and its still running strong.

Also, is it a manual or an Automatic? If its a manual then i say GO even if the heads are warped HAH but thats just me.

if its an Auto then i would make sure the overheating is as simple as we all hope. Just because the Autotranny (A4LD) is very prone to problems. A secondary tranny filter and Aux. Cooling system usually makes up for the slack in it, and all in all its a great tranny after that.

he said he'll get it for me for 500 bucks it is a manual i dont know the milage though

DUDE GET IT!

you will love it

they are bouncy like a yard-kart w/ mud tires and drive like freggin lawn mower...

explorers like to beast the road man, like an animal RAR.

but thats only if you like a truck thats fun

some people say it makes them sick...

they shoulda bought a camery

but by all means they are not cheap...

When I bought my '92 this is what I checked. I did it myself but you can have a mechanic check for a reasonable price:

Thorough test drive - in 2wd and 4 wd
In 4wd in a gravel parking lot drive in a tight circle in each direction, if it hops in the turn the 4x4 works well. Test in 4x4 high and 4x4 low.
Drive bumpy back roads to feel handling
Drive stop and go traffic
Drive highway and feel for wander and do some rapid decelerations from speed to feel for any kind of shake or pull in the steeringthat may indicate bad rotors or alignment

Check tire tread and condition

Open the hood and check general cleanliness - lots of oil indicates a probable leak. If it's much cleaner than the rest of the truck, he may have cleaned it to hide hints of a leak.

check all fluids for level and cleanliness (dirty fluids mean lack of maintenance)

jack up front end and try to move front tires in both a vertical and horizontal plane to check the tie rods and ball joints

while jacked up, get underneath (with stands in place) to check body mounts, frame and body for corrosion

put on parking brake and put into drive to test parking brake

check all lights, horn, accessories, spare tire, jack, etc

ask for maintenance records for last few years (especially for tranny rebuild recipt if it was done)

do a carfax report

go on a pilgrimige to Mecca and pray that you get a good ride (not that the Explorer is anything but a great ride, but sometimes you can be just unlucky)

If some things don't check out from my list, it may not mean you shouldn't buy it, but will at least give you bargaining tools.
Good luck, hope it works out with you and this X they are a great vehicle and lots of fun.

thanks guys ill do what u said ill take a good look at it and do an in depth inspection
if i have more questions ill post and if i get it well talk bout mods thanx again guys

is it a 4dr or a 2dr?

im gonna call tonite i still have to go look at it hes really busy so i havent been able to see it yet but ill call and talk to him tonite about it

what are you're plans for it?

if you are planning on lowering it you may want to look else where. 1st gen 4x4's can cause some issues with lowering b/c of the D35 front end.

If you are planning on lifting it or leaving it stock then take a good look over it as described before.

If you know where you want to go with it now, it might make it easier to identify things that you want to look at. Say you want to lift it and run big tires.....well then current tread life may not be as important...as long as you have the $ for new meats now.

give me the VIN ill do a CARFAX AND EMAIL IT TO YOU

sorry im new with this stuff but whats a vin? i dont think its a 4x4 but i want to make it a street machine without spending too much cuz i dont have alot

Yes. It should be on the top left of the dash or maybe on the door jam sticker.

i dont know if anyone knows but we have a 2002 dodge caravan se v6 automatic and the transmition is hitting kinda hard, the trans. has good fluid and its at the right level. does anyone know what should be done?
