Ok gang here is where I am turning to you for big help. 94 Explorer 125K
rebuilt tranny @ 95k
rebuilt again under warranty @ 106k
Locked front and rear
4.56 gears

Just got back from Colorado where shifts were feeling funny, since then it has gotten better. When I say funny I mean accel, then let off and get a loud clunk when it drops down to maybe 3rd from 2nd. Not real sure.
Anyway I was on sand with my truck dragging some volleyball courts with a small drag we usually use an ATV to do this but it is broke.
I pulled up to a fence and when I put in in Reverse nothing. I went back and forth with the gears and got nothing. I then put it in drive and realized it would go forward.

I had to use my winch to pull this sucker back because the rear tires were locked up and would not roll backwards????????

I then lost Drive, but it came back. When put in reverse it made the worst noise ever of sh*t grinding. I drove it away in 4Lo cause of a steep hill. On pavement I then put it into 2hi and got about 15 feet and crunch nothing. Popped it into 4hi and then it would not even shift into 4Lo???

4Lo light has been flickering when wheeling lately but definitly know I am in Lo range.

Got out and smakked shift motor with hammer, it eventually grabbed 4 LO. and i was able to park it.

Can't remember now but I think it will go forward in 2hi but not sure.

On a side note after using 4Lo last time I took it out and the dash light turned off but the button indicator above the radio stayed lit (only Low range not 4x4) but was very dim. I put it back into 4Lo and out and it went off.

I think those are all the long winded details I can post. I would think tranny is toast but don't know about this transfer case deal???? really hope it isn't both. and why the hell I can't roll backwards in "N" or "R" is beyond me. Perhaps I sheared the locker pins when the tranny jumped at reverse before it let loose. I am going to haul it home tomorrow but want to hear if anyone has experienced anything similar to this weird 4x4 engaging and light on dash flickering.

only other detail I have left out is that I also have an auxilary tranny cooler and have changed the tranny fluid once about 8 months after the rebuild and again about 7-8 months later, that was back in April and it was shifting a little hard then and those guys said it was a lil burnt.

I use the Explorer to pull my 18 ft ski boat around quite a bit which I know is tough on drivetrain.

Please!!! any suggested shift kits? I know CoryL has adapted a different tranny behind his 4.0 has anyone else cause this will be tranny 4 going into this truck.

Help!!!! Not to be posting too much but while searching the board I saw a thread that had about 70 replies in a couple days and there are some very knowledgable people here that I want imput from

danny.... this my seem off the wall but where you wheeling in any sand or water? or deep mud.... the trannys governer could be clogged or gummed up making it do all kinds of crazy things.... happened to me...

I wheel in every condition out there. I actually was tearing around on the sand just before I lost reverse, I crossed several creeks in Co, and do dabble in the mud.
This governor you speak of, how do I go about adressing the problem?

you have to drain the tranny and drop the pan.... you should have a shop do it.... it will be about 50 bucks.... same thing happened to me... and i have the same exact set up you do.... so just an idea...

So you are saying that you think you sucked in foreign elements in the breather???
I have my breather rerouted to the top of my hood.

Did you lose reverse as well as the ability to even roll the truck backwards??

I think I mentioned already, wicked grinding noise but no reverse when I step on throttle

well.... im not saying you sucked anything in... but the gov will just hang up.... cause it to do al kinds of crazy things...
