My haynes manual doesn't have the torque specs for the lower ball joint nut. Can someone provide the correct range?

See if this helps, it is a copy of the Chilton manual:

4x4 ball joint instl

It sounds like you install them until fully seated, then install a snap ring to hold them in, but I haven't ever done this.

Thank you for the reply Dogfriend.

I have already pressed in the ball joints in the mannor used in your link. Side note: I had rented the press from AutoZone and ended up buying one form Harbor Freight $40. The tools are Identical. I am now trying to install the Steering Knuckle back onto the axle.

The upper ball joint is smooth and is held in place by a pinch bolt. The lower joint is threaded and is held in place by a 28mm "Castle" nut. It is this "Castle" nut that I don't have the specs for. The manual Cautions: failure to follow the correct specs can result in steering problems:... The manual then points you to the spec page but only the pinch bolt is listed, the lower ball joint nut is not found...

I had e-mailed the Haynes people to inquire about the missing info...I would expect to hear back in 3-4 weeks with a messages telling me that info is not available

Torque Sequence

Torque the lower nut to 90 ft-lbs, then tighten to next slot for new cotter pin.

Then install the snap ring on the upper and torque pinch bolt to 48-65ft-lbs

The sequence they refer to is the complete- lower first then upper installation.

Thank you for the info...

Thanks Steve for the info. I will now be able to complete my ball joints tonight...

It is not necessary to torque the nut on the lower ball joint. Basically you just need to tighen it as tight as you can. Once it is tight you need to continue tightening the nut until the castle nut lines up with the hole allowing the cotter pin to line up. The main thing you MUST remember is to NEVER loosen or back off the nut in order to line up the hole. If you tighten the nut too much and pass the hole, the only thing to do is keep tightening it until the next slots in the nut line up.
