I was heading home from work and trying to merge onto the highway from a side road, but there was so much traffic I couldn't merge in, so I stopped until traffic cleared and was rear ended by a car while I was waiting. I called the police who took the report and tomorrow I have to call my insurance company and tell them about the accident even though the accident wasn't my fault.

My baby is still driveable but needs some cosmetic work :(

Here's a pic taken when I got home

Wow  Sorry to hear that, hope you weren't injured.

Be sure to have them check for frame damage when you go to the body shop.

Thats why I never stop on "on" ramps- I will make em hit me or someone else trying to get out of my way. :D

yikes
that is a pretty significant hit.

Odds are good it is going to total, but it may be worth buying back.
Post a shot of the side of the truck, mainly the quarter pannel.

Let me know how it goes and if I can help at all

Sure sorry to hear about that Sandy. Hopefully you and your daughters are ok.

Why would they total it for that? Possible frame damage?

Hell, they didn't total our rolled Mach 1:D

You didn't say, I hope no one was injured.

Consider Monmix' advice, not many people know you may be able to buy the car back from the insurance company after the settlement for a pittance.

That's the only digital image I have. I'll take some myself tomorrow. Except for what you can see there was no other damage to the quarter panel. Seems the bumper took the brunt of the damage. The guy that hit me lost his driver's side light and there was significant damage on the driver's front side of the car. His damage is worse than mine.

If they tell me that they want to total my truck, I'll get someone to do the body work myself and to hell with the insurance company. I just put $700 worth of stereo equipment in that truck and no way in hell am I giving it up.

A guy where I work does mechanics and body work on other people's vehicles. I'm going to ask him to look at it tomorrow and see what he thinks.

Rick, the only one in the truck was me because I was heading home from work. Except for a headache and a little neck stiffness, I'm ok. Was quite shaken up though. I've had my license for 25 years and never have been hit while I was behind the wheel...this is my first time

There is no frame damage that I can see, seems the driver that hit me caught me on the side of the bumper and that took the impact. I had no trouble driving it home or to the store later after I calmed down. My Explorer handled the way it always had since I've owned it

From what I can see, I need a new bumper, some cosmetic work and my tailpipe fixed

Thank you all for your concern :)

I've been staring at the photo you uploaded for a few minutes now and I think that there might be some frame damage. The chassis is bolted about 1/3 from the left edge of that bumper sticker and the bumper has bowed there (as evident by the odd reflection on the face of the bumper). Now the bumper does have some pretty thick reinforcement at the bottom (tied in to the hole where a hitch ball can be mounted) so this piece typically also has to bend in order for the frame rail to bend. But of course, only the insurance ppl can tell ;)

Its usually easier for an insurance company to total a car than to mess with fixing it. I think if the value gets within 60-70% of the black book value, they total the vehicle.

Also, its a '98 2 door explorer - not an '04 Mach 1. Unfortunately, nothing depreciates faster than an American SUV.

The good news is they made plenty of them and even if it is a technical total, junkyard parts are in abundance :)

Good to hear that you are okay. The car/truck absorbing the impact means it is doing it's job in protecting you. If your neck is still sore, definately something to get checked out. My wife was at a red light when someone rearended her about 5 weeks ago. She went to the hospital because her neck was really hurting, and still has some pain.

The guy that hit my wife never even got out of the car to see if she was okay. That coupled with the fact that he has the state minimum coverage for property damage of $15k and caused over $18k in damage has been pretty frustrating (plus the car has another week or two before it is done...).

Sorry to see the damage. Hopefully you can get her back up and looking good soon without dropping too much $$. Good to see you're alright though - that's all that really matters.

Wow Sandy.. Looks like you took a good hit. Why would you contact your insurance company if the guy is at fault? I would contact his insurance company and have them do the repairs and keep your company out of it so your rates don't go up.
