My 98 E.B. 5.0. I just notice that while in park the tach needle, every so often, goes from about 5,500(what ever the stanard idle is)to about 8,000rpm. I would not have notice except you can hear the idle change when you standing outside of the vehicle. Does other 5.0 out does this, or do I have a problem? Where can I get a Explorer specific tune-up kit? If I need one.

you sure that isnt 550 to 800 rpm? your truck at wot probably cant even reach 8000 rpm... and the stock tachometer only goes to like 6000...... anyway... that isnt a big jump... it is probably normal... the idle on my truck is about 700 rpm... also, this jump may occur because the A/C compressor may be cycling... Is any of your climate control system on when this surge happens? Welcome to the site...

Ok you are right about the rpm being in the 000's. I do have one of those auto climate thingy but the first time I heard it I thought maybe it could be the ac trying to maintain the climate. I switched it to manual and it did not change it.

turn it off completely.... just becuase the A/C is off according to the switches, doesnt mean it is really off..... the a/c depending on the switch condition will still come on with some of the regular vent settings....
