idling real ruff

hi i have a 2000 eddie bauer explorer with the 5.0 in it. all of a sudden today when i start it, it runs real ruff at idle. chugging and feels like its gonna stall out but doesnt. but as soon as you take it down the road, it runs fine and will again idle fine. untill you shut it off and start it back up it does the same thing. also the check engine light came on after i was driving like this for a while today. any help would be greatly apprecated. thank you

wheni unplug the maf it runs fine would that be whats wrong with it
