Hello!
I'm in a bind here. For a while my ignition was working great without a key. I didn't bother worrying about it because it's a work truck, and it was actually helpful to be able to start it without digging for a key. No big deal there. With that said, once it started doing that, I was unable to get the key in the ignition again. Since then, we no longer have the key as it was lost.
Now, the ignition is spinning freely. I had to get towed home. While waiting for a tow, I unscrewed all the stuff around the steering wheel. I found that underneath there is very little to work with. After some research, the only way to remove the ignition is to turn the key to the run position, then depress some sort of ball lock to release it. Well, my luck, that's not an option here.
So what should I do? Should I go to town with a nice size drill bit? I'm concerned about going too deep, and I'm also concerned that doing this will still not allow for the cylinder to release. Can I jam something in there to turn it? We really don't want to put any money into this truck. I work on all my vehicles myself and don't want to pay a locksmith to remove a $40 ignition from a $1200 truck.
TIA
Eric
