i posted this in the Sport Trac forum but have no responses.

Most of the time when I get in the truck, the interior lamps go out as soon as the driver side door closes.

But sometimes, the lamps stay on for a bit and then go off, like the interior lamp delay is working properly.

Any idea what could cause this?

Don't recall for sure but is it controlled by the headlight delay control? On mine that's a slider on the windshield mirror. If that's it, the contacts might have lost some spring, or hardened grease and residue needs cleaned off the switch track... IF it can be non-destructively disassembled. Sometimes the best first try is spraying some contact cleaner in and working one back and forth.

Interesting, I've never noticed any of my Explorer interior lights going out slowly/dimming. My 95 Crown Vic dims the lights gently whenever the door is closed.

^ What I was thinking of wasn't dimming, just a delay of X # of seconds before the lights abruptly turn off.

One scenario I see noted in a '99 manual (page 109) is that if the remote is used to unlock the doors, it will delay the interior lights for 25 seconds or until the key is turned to accessory or run position, so long as the dome lamp control is not set to the off position.

Oops, I didn't read the original post well enough, it reminded me of my CV just dimming the lights in a couple of seconds.

Thanks JC, I went back to my owner's manual and found this on Page 77:

Illuminated entry
The interior lamps illuminate when the remote entry system is used to
unlock the door(s) or sound the personal alarm.
The system automatically turns off after 25 seconds or when the ignition
is turned to the ON position. The dome lamp control (if equipped) must
not be set to the OFF position for the illuminated entry system to
operate.
The inside lights will not turn off if:
• they have been turned on with the dimmer control or
• any door is open.
The battery saver will shut off the interior lamps 40 minutes after the
ignition has been turned to the OFF position.

So the interior lamp delay does not function unless the remote entry system is used to unlock the doors.

There it is, the full description. Thanks for that, I've read my owner's manual once fully but forgot a lot of it.
