Is 1.5" spacers too much for gen 1?

I bought some mustang gt 17" rims. put some new 32" Destinations on them, and I don't like the way the hub looks sticking out like that. Also, the tire comes really close to the sway bay @ full lock.
I was thinking some spacers would not only pull that hub in a little, but also give me a more stable track width.
Is 1 1/2 inches too much?

The Dana 35 wheel bearings are very close together. That means they tend to wear and loosen up somewhat easily. Especially when you have over sized tires on the front. I'd assume spacers would have the same effect.
