Early Jeeps were prone to roll-over, the higher the more chance of roll-over.

If you have wider axles then you could go higher.

I built a Jeep CJ with TJ width axles and 6" lift, worked out well.

... just dont drive it like its a car on the street and you will be fine. even with the stock narrow axles the lift you want is gonna give you room for what, 31-33's? you should be ok. now, get those stinkin' drum brakes off the front; that would be the FIRST thing i would worry about;)

im going spring over axle on my 77 cj5 (about 4.5" lift after new psring pack) 33's on 15 x 10 rim. now i don thave it yet but have seen old jeeps with this same set up and they work nicely. i say go for it!

If you are sticking with the stock axles i would say 3" is a good lift. With that you can fit 31-33" tires. Any bigger and it might break the stock drivetrain. Also like someone said above, without going wider it will be a little more tippy the higher you go. On my 42 flatfender I estimate I have 1 foot of lift and 3/4 ton full width axles so it will be plenty stable offcamber and hold up to big tires. So to answer your question 3 inch is not too much but in your case i would say 3" is a good start.

What's old? Something that would work on a 70's model CJ may not on a 40's model.

So what year and model are we talking about?

I have a 1948 CJ2A under going restoration. IM planning on getting to work on it soon seing as to how, i have to have it running and out of my garage by November 2002. Where can i learn more about the suspension set ups? Id like to get at least a 4 to 6 inch life on my jeep and maybe get some Danas off a Wagoneer. Where could i find wider axels? Also, what aspects of combinning the axels and the drivetrain will i have to worry about? Are they all compatable? Last thing: once i have different axels, where am i going to find a lift kit? Will i need to look for my model jeep, or my model axel? thanks !!!!!!!!!:bounce:

anyone?:)
