Well, I got photoshop happy on a picture of my truck and actually came out with something I kind of like.

I just took off the back obviously, but I thought it might be cool to hack it off, and then somehow integrate a roll cage into it. I think it'd be cool to have a slant on the back end of it where there's no roof and mount the spare tire to it. It pretty much looks like a sport trac, just a little beefier and more square :D I wouldn't be doing this anytime soon if at all, just wondered what you guys thought cause I think it looks cool.

Also, it's not a great photoshop job, just rubberstamped out the back, but it got the job done :D

Like this.....?

The X is going across the back, and where you could Mount the Spare.... and the line above the X is a cross bar to Stiffen the Side bars.....

I was thinking something more like this (I tired to guess where the farthest bar would be to keep the 3D effect, not two on the same side):

You will have to put in a cage to keep the integrity of the passenger compartment. Might be time to visit CoryL ;)

It would look great! Just need to make sure everything is reinforced.

There is also a guy here in CO who chopped the back off his sport to make an Explorer "Amigo" stlye similar to what you show there Twotone........

He has a full cage, etc from what I understand, easier on an Ex then chopping the entire roof........also you may be able to do like a BII and use a later model Ranger tailgate????

:)

first off, if i was building an offroad 4 door X, i would DEFINATELY hack off the back and go with a cage. that white 1st gen. that was for sale in Heath's link is flat-out awesome.

second, you may want to reconsider the spare mounted to the cage on the rear. with that kind of slope, the spare will be mounted directly in the rear view, and you wont be able to see jack squat. the spare mount on my early bronc is not nearly that high, but its still in the way enough that im gonna move it. its just a big PITA.

maybe think about making an angled bed mount, like the generic ones offered from Fabtech. just an idea.

whatever you do, get a cage.

I see the choppin' bug is spreading :D hehe...

I remember seeing that white one. That is a sweet rig.

James - I was thinking more of putting the spare more in the trunk area where it wouldn't be in the way, and out of the way of the rear view, like I posted below.

I would probably keep the roof over the doors, not cut it out like Rick's picture.

Of course this is a really simple drawing of it, but you get the idea. I don't think I would go with a tailgate, although that would be something to look into...

Like I said before, I won't be doing this anytime soon. I wish I could, but it wouldn't happen till I get the pleasure of having her be a dedicated trail rig and not my daily driver. Hopefully that day will come sooner than later ;)

Who inspired the Chopping bug?

ok, jared, i see what you're saying with the spare.

you know, you could do it and just have an upholstery shop make a top with snaps like the white one. that way you could still daily-drive it.

Don't tempt me :D It's a good idea, just wish I had the funds

Ya it would be cool. I have often thought about that on my sport. Just not for a few more years. I think it would really kick ass. :D

I was going to chop the top of my BII off this year, until I found out I could easily make the side and rear windows re-moveable.................so I prefer this route to the complete soft top route, since I will still be able to have a full hard top in the winter.........

Bah, just stuff a tarp and some duct tape under the seat for when it starts snowing/raining :D

hahahahaha look whos talking! Dont forget this is my daily too........
I will need to get some marine grade rear speakers however since I plan to run most of the summer months with no windows at all...........

All stereo equipemtn will be protected from the elements/theives but the rear speakers will still be slightly exposed...so some good ol marine speakers will do the trick. :) My ultimate goal would be to make some soft windows that would snap in place for those quick rain storms.......
