I've been searching not to worry, just would like some more response to Old V6 vs new(er) V8 Explorers.
I have a '93 Explorer Sport 5spd with 186,000 miles. It runs great, no big issues other than loose steering which I have yet to investigate/ fix. I've had it for 5 years and only put on 50,000 miles. So far I've been really happy with it and haven't had any major issues just expected ones (A/C Recharge, Clutch at 135,000, RA Bracket and bushings, Manual Hubs, new 4x4 shift motor). I'm still on the stock motor and tranny.
I've been looking at the 5.0 Limiteds and Eddie Bauers on CL. I'm seeing some pretty nice ones (Compared to mine) for a decent price.
My question is are the V8s going to give me similar reliability? I've read so many horror stories about rebuilding auto trannys in the V6s that I'd like to stay away from them. I tow 3000lbs occasionally and the V8 would be great for going over the pass, my push rod V6 isn't bad actually, especially with the manual and tall gears.
