I broke the rod that attaches from the clutch pedal into the master cylinder. Is there any way to replace just this rod, or do I have to swap out the whole shebang?

I broke it on my F250, and had to buy a new master, no one sold just the rod. I did find a thread on a Ford website where a guy fabbed a new one out of real steel, (my stock one is pot metal), but it was too involved for me.

I did the same thing to the original rod, since it was just plastic with a tiny steel wire in the middle. The replacement master cylinder from Ford is a different design and has a pushrod made entirely of metal. I regret not trying to remove what was left of the broken pushrod from the original master cylinder and then replacing it with the metal one, since my Explorer has never been the same with the replacement master, it made the clutch pedal a LOT harder to push. I'd suggest getting the rod, (either getting the master cyl from Ford or checking if any aftermarket kits have a metal rod), and at least trying to replace the rod only before resorting to replacing the whole master. It might be worth your while and save you headaches in the future.

Thanks for the replies. I pulled it out and found the rod is held into the cylinder with an easily removed c-clip, but certainly can't find just the rod anywhere. If I'd had a flashlight handy, I would been able to see that the rod assembly could actually be switched out with the cylinder still in place...oh well.

I'm going to go check the offering at the auto parts place tomorrow, hopefully it'll have the steel rod. Looking at mine, it looks like the metal rod is actually made of two separate parts, fit together in ball-and-socket fashion, then held together by a plastic sleeve formed around the two pieces. Kind of a screwy set up. I've priced the cylinders from $25-40 at scrap yards, $55 new at Pepboys.
