What is the general oppinion out there on the James Duff 70/30 shocks? they say they have them for any lift, and was considering running them with my superlift 5.5" suspension, along with the double shock mounts front and rear, and stabilizer. Who out there is running shocks other than the superlift superrides with their 5.5" lift?

On the Ranger board I frequent, the consensus is that Duff's lifts are top quality, but their shocks suck.

My understanding is that Rancho 9014's (for F-150s) work well for big-lift Rangers. The RS9000's I have are supposed to be good up to a 3" lift, and I would bet that if you call National Tire and Wheel, they'll know if the 9014's are what you need.

I'm looking hard at the 2.5" VR for my 97 S/C Ranger, so I've done a little research already.

Duff's people and in-house parts are great, but I think they are reselling some of those crappy ProComp ES3000 shocks with their lifts (or they're buying them from the same company ProComp is).

Best Regards,
Brian in CA

I have a James Duff 2.5" lift on my Explorer and I really like it. I also have the dual shocks in front and the steering stabilizer. I think that the kit works well with the shocks, but they can be a bit firm at times. Compared to almost $70-$90 a shock for Ranchos I think that they work great for $30. The only real problem that I have had with James Duff is their instructions are vague at times, other than that their products and service have been very good.

When we installed the Duff 2.5" kit I installed the 70/30 shocks up front since out stock ones were too short. I drove 125 miles with those (and no sway bars) and I nearly got motion sickness. I changed them to Rs9000's and I love the ride. If we had the sway bar connected or dual 70/30's per corner we may have been ok.

I have the JD lift right now and the shocks are ok, but considering Rancho has a buy 3 get 1 free deal right now, you should be able to get 4 RS9000s for $200. I'd go with that, well, actually I am when I upgrade to a 5.5" lift in a month or two.

Unless you run dual fronts, don't even think about the Duff shocks with Superlift springs. The Superlift uses a fairly soft spring rate and without some dampening on the compression you will bottom out. Spend the money and get the Rancho RS9000 you won't regret it.

Duff socks in compbination with Duff's progressive rate springs ride excellent.

Aren't the RS9000's the ones that people complain about having to adjust them all too frequently? I thought that I had read that somewhere. Do the Rancho's come in a suitable length for the 5.5" lift, with the Duff double shock mounts? I am not sure if the same length of shocks are used on a truck that uses the hoop mounts and one that uses the stock mounting locations, it seems unlikely. Or would it be better to go with a double shock setup with another company than James Duff? I think that Rancho makes one, if I am not mistaken......

If you do need to adjust your shocks often you can use an in cab controller. This will adjust the shocks by using a very very small air compressor.

I only have to adjust ours to 3 different conditions...
We use the following settings in the following conditions...

front/rear settings
4/3 normal town and highway driving
3/3 or 3/2 rock crawling
1/1 when driving around Aqua Prieta Mexico (they don't have roads.. they have potholes connected by 10 feet of pavement)

On average we adjust them twice a month (when we get where we are going and when we leave the trail.. thats it)

Mudd *****,
Sorry it took me so long to reply, I didn't notice the question.

The Rancho sale expires June 30th and most places carry it, just check any four by mag.

Its pretty sweet because you can get 4 RS9000s for only $200
