DETROIT... Bowing to pressure from a lawsuit and citing a mixture of
driveability, efficiency and environmental concerns, Daimler Chrysler
today announced that the short-lived production run of the Wrangler
Rubicon will cease in April. The Rubicon model of the popular sport
utility had additional equipment meant to make it more capable in off
road situations. "The Rubicon package has proven to be a failure in
the actual environment where the vehicle is being driven." said
Dieter Baumgartner, Jeep Division Director of Product
Placement. "Many of our customers have had serious complaints about
the steering system at slow speeds and with the rising cost of
gasoline, the excessive fuel mileage." Baumgartner continued.

Kimberley White of Silver City, New Mexico bought a Wrangler Rubicon
in January, 2003. She and others are joining in a class action
lawsuit against Daimler Chrysler in an attempt to return what she
claims is a defective vehicle. "At first we really liked it," she
stated recently, "It fit our lifestyle perfectly, with the tough
looks and big tires." But the more she and her boyfriend drove it,
the more undesirable the special features of the Rubicon model showed
through. "We took it to the Southridge Mall parking lot and tried
pulling the little lever and pressing the buttons for the four wheel
drive system." she said in an interview, "But it went so slow people
were honking at us and when we tried to turn into a parking space it
felt like the whole drivetrain just locked up solid and the tires
made all these scratching and squealing noises." Other complaints
listed in the lawsuit included poor gas mileage, noisy highway ride
and the possibility of environmental damage if used off road.

"In reviewing sales figures we have decided that the low volume of
production does not justify the additional expense that continued
production will cause us." said Baumgartner. "We are seriously
considering the addition of a Rubicon package to the Liberty, but
without all the extra equipment that the Wrangler model had. We have
found that most of our customers prefer leather seats and cruise
control on their Jeeps."

Tell me this is an April Fools Joke!!! The lady that they quoted sounded like a complete idiot!!! "Pulled the lever and pushed the buttons"?!?!?! Come on...

This is a joke right?!?!?!

How long will it be before the regular Wrangler doesnt meet saftey standards? I bet they will quit making the Wrangler pretty soon here..........just my 2 cents...

You've got that right Robb. What kind of an idot would buy a jeep or a 4x4 for that matter and not know when to pull the 4wd lever. Man, i wish i could just smack that person.

It does kind of suck that they are ending production. I was hoping they would be a little more common, so that maybe their D44 front axle would be a little cheaper!:D

ok, so there buying a lifted wrangler with lockers, D44's and 4 to 1 low range, and expecting good mileage, great steering out of a stock steering pump, and good turning radius with the diffs locked. i hate people. i hate all people. they should have bought a caravan. a purple caravan.

am i the only one that gets the feeling this was an April Fool's hoax? i hate to ruin the moment if it is...

oh man I fell for it, I was getting pissed off at the ignorance of it all! I fell better now. Personally I think the rubicon is a good idea, all that equipment and it is under warrenty. Too bad ford wont do something like a MOAB Sport, with a real locker not some wimpy lsd!

I fell for it:cool:

Well maybe my wish will come true in a few years, might be able to find that D44 cheaper then a 1000 bucks.

The Jeeper mentality was there. The story was dumb enough to be believable. Now just sit back and wait for it to really happen.

Actually in 2004 as 2005 model, Chrysler will offer a long wheel base, well, not long but longer wheel base version of the TJ (Wrangler). I don't think they will quit building Wranglers soon, and I hope they also got the message that they should not mess with the Wrangler's solid axles, rear and front, in the next 250 years.
