Welcome to the registry for Wedgie 2.0, who has been affectionately named "Deuce"

From Shad's info to save keystrokes:

Here is the run down:

2000 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0L - AWD
Deep Wedgewood Blue
Gray Leather
Yada, yada, yada...

Highlights:

  • Transmission rebuilt at 160,000 miles, and filled with synthetic
  • Lifted 2" in front with torsion keys
  • Lifted 3" in back with Add-a-Leaf and Warrior Shackles
  • New Superlift shocks at 166,000 miles
  • 31" x 10.5" tires
  • As much rust as some southern trucks- she's clean...

Interesting fact- it was an XLT fitted with air-ride shocks from the factory. System was disabled with the kit and shocks were put on to avoid costly repair.

Today 1/28/11 was the first car wash.

IMG_1671.jpg

And yes, it needs to be cleaned... :D

IMG_1707.jpg

Um... This is going to be my biggest challenge to date.

But it's going to be fine. It's an incredible place to start- the steering wheel isn't even gummy or rolled. I'm very pleased with the canvas...

Anyway, after the car wash, I snapped some pics for starting point reference.
So, here are our obligatory before pictures...

Door seams always oiled

IMG_1688.jpg

Hatch looks brand new as well!

IMG_1698.jpg

Nothing on the rocker seams ...but a paint chip :D

IMG_1687.jpg

Rockers nice. No rust even at the back- just grime and ice. I think the mudflaps really helped...

:scratch::dunno::bsnicker: Wasn't me! (BRIAN)

BTW Joe, after the 'Wedgie', the 'Deuce' just doesn't work, I dub the 'Le ******'! It is a wheelin rig afterall!

Not so much... AAL is already coming off... ;)

Wedgie 2.0 = Deuce. Sorry, already stitched into the seats! :)

Get some better shocks and run no more than 35 psi. Those add a leafs aren't whats making the ride rough, the TT is. With better shocks, you can compensate for the TT.

We can teach ya a few things to keep your ride lifted and feel comfy if ya give us a chance Joe. Don't wuss out on us so fast. :p:

No, the rear end rode like a tank. It's a capacity spring. Rides night and day with it off there. The TT does make it rougher, but that was the big culprit for the issues I was having. At 28psi.

Honestly- as much as it will ever go offroad anywhere vs. driving the fam around, I have to be conscious about people not wanting to ride in it or it defeats the purpose... No issue with the lift, just need to tweak things.

You can make the suspension so tight you cant get it to move by jumping on it. But, with the right valving and dampening shocks it can still be made to ride like its on clouds...just saying :)

I bet that capacity spring did stop the leafs from flexing much. Too bad you weren't closer to go for a ride in the Black Hole. You would see what I am talking about. I can stand on the front or back end, jump up and down, and the rig will not move a bit, but it rides so smooth on the road or even a rough trail, you would think it's a Cadillac.

Tires with big sidewalls help here also.

Gman, are your roads anything like ours though?

In all 4 Explorers ive had, they hurt. Literally, roads so rough you even see Caddys hopping around.

We have potholes that come out of nowhere!

Ok, so lots of action on the rig today.

New front pads and rotors
New lower ball joints on both sides
Tore off the AAL
Replaced this spring (they work better when they're in one piece):

and did a drain and refill with synthetics of both the rear diff and the transfer case.

Got home and did the poor-man's power steering fluid flush with a turkey baster and 3 bottles of power steering fluid, and finished with a fill of Lucas and a vacuum treatment. Steers nice.

Thoughts: After removing the AAL and replacing that spring, it rides night and day. I lost just under 1/4" lift in the rear, but it still looks fine, and rides MUCH better.

Here are my two organizer pieces. If needed, I can leave them somewhere, and get replacements somehow...

Pics are for display purposes only

Mine is black. 18 1/4 inches long, 12 inches wide, 4 1/2 inches deep. I run a bungee cord through the open areas on the side, and attach the ends to the tiedown hooks located in the cargo area.

Good to see your doing some work on deuce!

Brian- Amsoil for everything... Will probably drain and fill the front axle this spring.

Thanx Nick- and none of it cleaning! :D

So how much of that amsoil did you drink?:D Joe'soil??? Don't mind me, too much power steering fluid:thumbsup:

aww alittle JB Weld can fix that in no time :p:

Alright, so I had some very unnerving things happen today while driving Deuce.

Felt a miss, CEL comes on. Great. I'm still not up to par to wrench.

So I took Celly's advice... Tire still on. Let's check some plugs, I know I need plug wires, so I'm sure that's the issue. Arcing, then tosses some codes, etc...

DSCF4213.jpg

Let's pull a plug.

DSCF4214.jpg

WTF is this?

DSCF4215.jpg

I spit a lot out on the forum. Now I have to formally apologize. Deeply- sincerely. For this:

Fouling, misfiring, sucking out loud... The stories are all over- just say no to Bosch in Ford vehicles….

Yep- Bosch plugs do NOT work well in the Ex, as well as other Ford vehicles. Stay away from them, you'll be replacing them very shortly after they so in, because yes- they SUCK. That is not an exaggeration…

Toss in some Motorcraft plugs (or Autolite if you like) NOT Bosch... and some Motorcraft wires, and you'll be motoring complaint free with regards to your ignition system for a long time…

Come on- only a boob would run Bosch plugs with all of the evidence against them on the forum …

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

DSCF4217.jpg

Freakin' Bosch +4's. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

I wonder how to resolve this problem?

DSCF4218.jpg

Just kidding Eric, I didn't mess with the Wedge. But, I haven't pulled the wires out yet. I wonder what's in there? ;)

Boob, signing off for the evening. Going to Rock Auto...

Joe, you should check some of the posts, really bad reviews on Bosh plugs.....

Hey, I like your beanie!! Are those Doc Martens??

Good spot GRNMACHINE, if they're not worth a try, very comfortable. If they are, how many holes in them doc's Joe?

I like my beanie! :)

Not Doc's. I used to have some, but I had to cheap out with some GBX's when I was between jobs last summer. They're about giving up the ghost though. Will probably be getting some Doc's again. They last... Or some Wolverine's. Wolverine is HQ'd near me, and they have a killer outlet store in Rockford, MI.

I can't believe as much as I've harped on Bosch plugs, that I've been driving around with those same f'n Bosch plugs.

I didn't know they were in there! I swear!!! :D
