JoshC's chopped top with a roll cage

Nice ride

I am new to the site. I like your truck. Looks like you have done a lot of work to it. My wife would kill me if I did all that to my vehicle…meaning to wreck it and then put a lot of money into it. Either you are not married or you have a pretty awesome wife.
So you are thinking a canvas top? You will still have to get a cover of some type to keep it dry if you are on a longer trip or something. What color are you painting the framework?
Well, anyway nice ride. I'll send you pics of my ride sometime.

:)

Thanks Josh, am so glad you did not think I was saying something to piss you off. I admire your work, ideas and more then anything, the way you ask for advice from others. More people should be like you, including me, because it could have saved me some grife. Keep up the good work.

Thank you sir. I am married, and i do have an amazing wife, she lets me do this with a lot of resistance, in other words i pay for it one way or another, lol. But she soon lets it go.

Yeah i'm going to get a canvas top, just a shade more then anything. I'm going to find a good heavy duty trap to fit the cage part for when i'm trailering it so that if it's nasty out i'll won't have to worry about it.

Thanks for the compliments everyone else!

The tubes on the A and B pillars go down through the body right at the door seals and are welded to some 2x4x3/16" thick out riggers that are welded to the frame. The D pillar is welded directly into the top of the frame.

The fastsners for the windshield are just zinc phillips head bolts with nylon lock nuts.

If I had something like that I think I would have to push it over onto its side just to see how it holds up :)
Can you say donuts?
hahaha

Paint job

Well, aren't you worried that your wife would get upset if you have already spent all this money and now you are buying a tarp, top cover, paint job, and so forth? I know my wife would be pretty upset. Well, it's different for me though cause we just had a baby and I've tried hard to save up and prepare for a youngen. I always TRY to put my wife and baby before my truck, but it's hard. Well, kiss that amazing wife of yours.

So you didn't answer my question about the paint job. What color are you painting your frame work?

Do you go riding a lot? There is not much riding here in SC. I'd like to come up your way so time.

:)

That looks great Josh

EDIT: I just noticed. Are there no C-pillar supports down to the body/frame?

I really need to start on my cage

They're there, just a little farther back than the actual c-pillar. BTW, cage looks good, but I'm with Section, can we get some pics of how it ties into the frame? :)

I saw that. But that piece doesn't look like it ties down into the floor of the body or frame, so its practically useless for protecting rear seat passengers.

Your right, I think they only tie into the crossbrace behind the rear seat and there doesn't seem to be any vertical support for any of that area.

No, she's cool with it. I'm not spending a ton of money on paint, probably just some rustolem spray that way i can touch it up. The tarp is nothing, but the cover will be expensive, so i'll have to save up for the since the baby is duen in 7 weeks!

And i'm just going to paint it black. The guy that built it painted the windshield area with a silver hammer something or other paint and it look cool, but doesn't go with anything else.

You are right Jefe, no c pillar support to the frame. Idiot didn't think it needed, and that's another point that was to be tied into an exo. I honestly gave up on the guy finishing what i did want done because i knew i could do it myself. I just couldn't get my bends to turn out the way i wanted.

wow dude, i like it, kinda what i was goin for, but i am leaving the cab. Was it easy to fab those doors? was there a pattern or was it by hand? i get my bonus soon (navy) and i have that itch to start now. I can wait another week though. So anyways man, looks great. Later,
Chris

Paint Job..reply

Well, sounds like you have everything in line. Personally, I think a top cover will not look good, plus it's expensive. I would pass on that if I were you.

I would like to do more to my truck, but my wife really wants to go on a cruise so I'm trying to save money for her.

Good luck with the paint job!

:)

Thanks fellas.

The doors i just did it on the fly. I'm not happy with the rear doors. I did the front ones first, no problem. Then to the rear ones, i started out with the top mount, welded the pipe up to it and then did the bend for the bottom and welded it up then i mounted it and stood back and noticed that if you flush mount the top tube to the hinge at a 90 Degree angle then it slopes down as it goes toward the rear of the truck. I already had it welded up so i just said oh well.

A piece of canvas is expensive?

I didn't get 100% done, but i really needed to get some paint on it, moisture was starting to get to a couple of spots. Anyways, here are the updated pics. Sorry for the shadows on some of them!

Here is the picutre of the tire carrier, pretty simple. And yes the bolt is not quite level, lol.

Notice on the rear i did some chopping on the lower part of the fender. I made my rear bumper extended out like that and i'll eventually tie the cage like an exo to the bumper and i'm going to fab the extended tube to bolt to an outrigger that will be welded to the frame for support.

And this is my setup

I'm hoping to get some done this week. I'm modifing my coil buckets and i got some new 6" skyjacker springs i'm putting in which has given me about an inch more of lift up front. I don't like the nose dive it has now. This weekend we are having a trail clean up and i think if i can get my other coil spring set up installed i might take her out since it's been since november that it's been in the garage.

Josh, that looks SO good!

Frame tie-in pics, please? :D

Dooh, i knew i was forgetting a picture Bill, i'll get that this week, after i get some new batteries for my dead camera. But thanks!
